    LA Boat Numbers

I need to change my boat numbers. Anybody know of an good way to get the old numbers off without messing up the gelcoat. The numbers that are on it now, have been put on by a shop. They are not the numbers that you buy at a store.

Are they painted on or Stickers?

If they are stickers, Easy-Off oven cleaner will work. you can also use a heat gun to get the numbers to release and then polish the area to remove the sticky residue.

Interlux also makes a spray that will help to remove stickers and pinstripes. I haven't tried it.

Paint is a bit more trouble. the easiest way is probably to just wet sand them off with 600 grit, then polish the area back to shine.

Real easy -- I do this every time I need to remove the old before putting on new lettering. Take a heat gun or hair dryer to soften up the vinyl, lift a corner with your fingernail/tweezers, and then gently peel it off. If the vinyl's not too old and brittle, you'll be able to get it off in one piece. That's assuming you don't have a $300 vinyl stripping tool at your disposal, which is a high-speed wheel that won't damage the fiberglass. Then, take some isopropyl alcohol to remove the residual adhesive. WD-40 works well too on the old adhesive. Just make sure you get it all off before putting on new lettering. Easy-off is OK on painted stuff; just don't let that or any harsh chemical sit too long on the glass.
