    Boat Name

I want to name a boat with an unusual name that is pretty catchy. I don't want to see a year from know other boats with My boat name on their transom. I worked on a couple boats that were very unique and had names to go along with them. There were no other boats out there with the same name so it was easy to know the boat. I am alright with having the same style boat but not the same name.

What can you do to protect your boats name other than chemical peeling the names off the imposters?

I think the only way to do it.. and i say THINK is to document the vessel but then only commercial boats and charters and such can not use the same documented name in the same state i believe.. i am not 100 percent but i dont think there is really anything else you can do...

kind of tough to do it...

Even documented vessels can have repeated names. There are just too many boats and not enough creativity to get around it.

A clever naming method I heard of was combining the names or middle names of your sister's or female blood relative as these names will not change.

Never name a boat after your wife or girlfriend especially if it is a charter rig. After a divorce you have to redocument the boat, redo all paperwork, insurance, rename your business, change the names on all of your pfd's and throwables just to get rid of her name and hope your customers remember your name and not just your boats name from their last trip.

You can pick a name that while humorous, is slightly offensive to the general population - For example in Mass - "SOXSUX"

I had a friend sell a boat and put into the contract the name needed to be changed. The boat was going to P-town MA and the 2 guys never changed the name. He was pissed.

    Suggested boat name

How about "Giants Rule"? That will get all the "Iggles" fans that dock in Cape May with you in a stew.

    Name Game

You know this is a good question that was brought up....Unfortunatly with so many boats out there and so many fishing vessels it seems all the names have been used, and even when you come up with a great name it seems there is always some one down in a neighboring marina taking your name!

I am still deciding on a name that is unique and not taken by others, i research the name that i came up with before, and so far the top 10 names i came up with are already in use by some captains up and down the east coast.

My fathers named his hatteras with another language. no one knows what it means but its unique as all hell!

Another problem i noticed is some websites spin off any boats name that won a tournament or is in the spot light....Maybe there is a way by copy write laws.

    Good luck!
