Important message for all SF.com boat owners
To all boat owners,
Each year, I like to run a thread to remind everyone who has boat insurance, to check their:
1) Lay-up Period - Warranty
We will once again experience a good late fall - early winter bite for Striped Bass, and Sea Bass fishing. Many of us will delay when the boat is hauled to get in on some late fall action. Some of us well into January even.
Check your policy where it reads "Lay-up Period" and make sure the boat is either out of commission OR call your agent ( better yet - send request in writing and keep record of it) to extend the lay up period to when you will actually haul the boat.
For example - many policies are issued with 11/30 or 12/1 - Lay-up dates for their Boat/Yacht insurance. Say you go fishing this Saturday, ( 12/2) - something happens while out to sea, you would allow your insurer to deny a claim presented after your lay-up warranty expired for the policy year, ( if you were operating your vessel past the lay-up warranty date.)
Also, if you intend leaving the vessel in your slip AFLOAT - for winter storage, I would report this to the insurer as well. They will issue a Ice Damage Exclusion Endorsement, which is standard for vessels laid up afloat.
The problem with this, is often people will represent on their insurance application, that the boat will be stored ASHORE. If a claim gets filed for say Burglery, or Hull Damage while stored Afloat, they would deny it due to the fact you said it was stored ashore.
Make sure your insurance will work for you if you need it. Let me know if I can help answer anyone's question's on this subject.
