Boat Fire OCMD

A 40ft Viking was turned into charcoal yesterday just of the beach off 118 st . Nick from " Get Sum " got the Capt and crew member off but the boat is a total loss . I talked the the crew member on the beach and it sounds like the motor ran away on them . Sea Tow towed to just off the beach .

I hear ya . I,m going to start checking for intake shutoffs before i go to sea ...

What exactly happens when an engine runs away? Sorry if it's a dumb question.

A runaway happens when the engine can not be controlled by the throttle or governor or rack (this is on mechanically controlled two strokes). The engine usually ends up failing catastrophically...piston through block, oil pan, etc.

Remember that a diesel engine will run on almost any type of fuel including engine oil.

Hey Franky ,
The boat was on the way up to Northside I R for a hull out and survey . I can see the report now ...some fire damage ... the new name will be "my charcoal "
