but that is not an uncommon thing... Hatt.'s, do that also... along with any other boat that gets hy'dro'licked out here in our warm south florida weather... always good when ya hear the smack of a fiberglass sheet ripping off! I brought a topaz 44 that we got from Harwich port in febuary... I don't like cold!!! and when I got to west palm she shedded a 4'X12' sheet of bottom.... and we had a Hatt in the bahamas wahoo shed a huge side sheet and bottom like that in the pics.. as for bertram though that really is a wierd thing.. the faster we make them the lighter they are! there is so much dedication on every boat builder on design and layup and 'stuff-happeneds' .. bet ya Bert makes it right though...
Questsportfishing - instead of saying it happens to Hatt, can you be specific, like what year/model? I would say these are RARE events, given the volume of FRP boats manufactured. That Topaz 44 event goes way back too, they stopped manufacturing it in 1989.
I do know the 2nd or 3rd 72' Bertram manufactured circa 1990 had to have a new bottom skin applied due to a mostly dry bond from outer skin to balsa core. This was in the era when Boat manufacturer's where in the infancy of vacuum bagging FRP skins to cores.....
Hope Bertram steps up to the plate and takes care of it - we will see how good the Italian owners are at damage control?
good read, glad someone had the love and time to refit, and refurbish a water logged vessel - but that shouldnt be happening anymore - they should have found their mistakes fixed the core problems and went from there. this boat was brand new........In insurance we often come across comapnies unwilling to write certain vessels - new and old because of the quality and standards that their built at. I have never run across this problem with Bertrams......should be interesting to see how or if this will effects writing future High Valued Bertrams.
Again - im glad no one was hurt - and hopefully Bertram will do whats right for the client - who is a long time Bertram owner. (however i have no doubt that they will).
