    Berkely

Read the letter to the mayor from a major corporate head.

Berkeley to Marine Corps: You're Not Welcome
BERKELEY, Calif. Local officials in this liberal city say it's time for the U.S.Marines to move out.
The City Council has voted to tell the Marines their downtown recruiting station is not welcome and "if recruiters choose to stay, they do so as uninvited and unwelcome guests."
The measure passed this week by a vote of 8-1.

Contact the city council at Berkeley,CA via email: clerk@ci.berkeley.ca.us

Now check this out, here is a letter a businessman wrote to the Mayor of Berkeley.
Is this a great country or what?

    Dear Mayor Bates,
In that you and your city have chosen to gravely insult the brave men and women, who have indeed bought you that right with their blood, I am informing you that my company will no longer do business with any of our current suppliers located in theBerkeley, California metro area.
In that my company is in international resort real estate development, and do business with and am associated with, developers and investors worldwide, I am informing all of my contacts, associates and patrons that we will no longer do any business of any sort with anyone living in theBerkeley area.
In that we/MDG Resorts are currently building a state of the art mega-yacht marina, all of the suppliers of Marina equipment, all owners of Yachts , all suppliers of Yacht materials & supplies, all yacht brokers and all tangential yacht business purveyors will likewise be informed that we will not do any business whatsoever with anyone from the Berkeley area.
Likewise all suppliers of building materials, both interior and exterior, currently associated with any of our several resort developments (Brisamar 300+ villas and 200+ condos: Porto Hussong,www.portohussong.com 500+ condos, 180 slip mega-yacht marina) both of which I might add have international recognition by virtue of glowing reports in Robb Report, Wall Street Journal, Yacht World, Forbes.
I will likewise inform all of our investors, most of whom are very wealthy yacht owners, casino owners, high net worth international businessmen, of our decision to essentially boycott all products and providers located in, or associated with in any way whatsoever, Berkeley, Ca.
Trust me when I say that having been in the real estate development business for over 35 years, our list of contacts and associates is long and very, very impressive. We, and I personally, are going to recomend that they ALL along with us boycott your city, its purveyors, suppliers, and businesses and CHARITIES of every kind.
You have every right to choose to take the obnoxious anti-military stance you have taken, and as stated, that right was bought for you with the blood of better men than you.
I too have every right to do all that I can to insure that your city suffers consequences arising from that obnoxious, sickening stance.
    Cordially,

    Shades of 68!

Been watching and reading for a while and this is my first time responding on the site. I have been staring at this post since it came on and I am at a loss. We are in trouble and anyone that cant see it is having a hard time seeing. I can't believe this post is so quite! Although it took me an hour just to try to think what I would say. What I really want to say, I can't because I would be thrown off. This business owner is right and also has the balls to do something about it. He gets my vote. 40 years ago I and thousands of other guys went thru a suck time coming home. It"s back and I for one don"t like it.

    Thumbs up

i applaud the Meridian group for their efforts and proposed boycott.....but keep in mind that is MAJOR business fighting City Hall, most often smaller business say the mom/pop operations dont have a chance.......Hmmm....maybe the soon to be EX-Mayor can get a job with Meridian....perhaps he could be the doorman at the USMC recruiting office!!

    Berkeley goes to war

    Wednesday, February 6, 2008

There's nothing surprising - or objectionable - about an anti-war protest outside a Marine Corps recruiting office in Berkeley. Bullhorns, locked arms, chanted slogans: Bring it on if that's the way demonstrators want to oppose the Iraq war.

But what is the Berkeley City Council doing by endorsing statements denouncing these recruiters as "uninvited and unwelcome intruders" and reserving curb space for the convenience of weekly protesters?

Berkeley's leaders have taken the worthy notion of political protest and shoved it over the cliff. While playing up arguments of free speech and organized protest, the council has loaded the deck with insulting language that denigrates the military and embarrasses the anti-war cause.

The motion approved by the council includes a number of remarkable statements: "The United States has a history of launching illegal, immoral and unprovoked wars of aggression" and "The military recruiters are sales people known to lie to and seduce minors."

The move has provoked an uproar. South Carolina Republican Sen. Jim DeMint wants to yank some $2.1 million in Washington money bound for Berkeley schools, food programs and ferries. Sorry senator, we don't see the connection - or sense of fairness.

Two Berkeley City Council members, Betty Olds and Laurie Capitelli, are hurrying a resolution for the council's Feb. 12 meeting to paper over the harm done. Their idea is to state Berkeley's opposition to the Iraq war and support the troops, no-brainer notions in local politics. The measure would also attempt to undo the damage by also dropping the offending rhetoric of the original resolution that singled out the Marine recruiters. That would be a welcome ending to a foolish crusade.

We pay a LOT of US federal taxes. I don't want a single penny of it to end up in anything that profits, supports, or in any way contributes to ANY organization that is aligned with Berkely California, or their political stance.

These people are the scorpion in the old story about the ride across the river.

While I'm not surprised that there are butt heads like this in the country, I do find it objectionable.
    2.
If the berkely city counsel sees the Us military as intruders perhaps they should be shipped elsewhere.
Let them learn the difference between "intrusion" and "Defense".
    3 &4.
Political protest by individuals is a "protected" right in this country. When an elected official of this country publicly takes an anti US stance, this, in my opinion, is borderline, if not outright, Treason.
    5.
Washington Money directed to Berkely should be used elsewhere. The teachers in this community probably share the counsels views. Just what are they teaching these kids.
Filling their heads with anti US propaganda ?
Withdrawing funds seems fair to me.
    6.
Sorry. You made your position very clear. Can't take it back.

While I may not agree with what you have to say, Be aware, that I will not defend your right to say it.
You said it, you defend it.

Sorry, This kind of sh*t really pisses me off.
    Joe.

Nah, Why waste a perfect opportunity. Lets give all the illegal aliens a free vacation to Berkely, give Berkely back to mexico and build a fence around it. Kill 2 birds with one stone.
