Austin,
I am not sure if my freezer even has a temp control. To keep bait frozen you
have two choices, dry ice or make a salt water slurry that will get cold enough to keep your bait solid.
You can get dry ice at some supermarkets or most welding gas supplier.
Best investment a communting dead bait fisherman will ever make--- I bought this last year and it is the ticket. This is an Engle Freezer that really freezes and runs on 110AC or 12v DC ( cigarette lighter.) For the guys that don't have a freezor on board you can simply run this freezer on the 12v system in the boat (does not draw much current). Of course it is great for transporting bait fro home to the boat. It will save me money in the long run.
Available at Offthehook bait & Tackle
I have thermometers in all my three of my bait freezers, and try to keep them at -10, my old one that is all she will do cranked up, my new one will go to -20. At -10 or more bait will keep for multiple years.
Traveling, I live five miles from my boat so that is not an issue, sometimes they are in a bag bungeed to the back of the beemer.
When we fished in OC, I learned how to pack them to keep them froze on the 4 hour car ride from Frisco to OC. Good cooler to start with. Bottom layer of ice 2" thick, ballyhoos packed a tight as possible, leaving about 2 " on top, cover with newspapre to form a tight seal around the top of hoos, wet them a little helps, pack tightly with ice to the top of the cooler.
They were always froze still when we got to OC.

The best thing that I've found to keep things frozen is to reuse the bags that you get boxed wine in. I empty them and then pull out the spiggot and clean them out and fill them with water and freeze. Use them in just a regular cooler and they stay frozen for a couple of days and keep things cool a lot longer, like for a week. I keep a couple of them frozen at all times and ready to go. The nice part of it is you can shape them in any shape you want.![]()
