I have noticed a lot of questions posted on different forums about my Avet kingfish tournament drag updates, ie: "Kingfish Washers". I came up with these updates to allow for a more "spread out" and less exponential increases in drag. This is particularly important to anglers who fish for Kings, Sails, Stripers, etc. As far as I know this update is not important to those who are fishing on the West Coast, to date I haven't had any requests from West Coast anglers for this update. I came up with the update to focus on issues brought about by anglers who fish SKA, FLW, Sailfish, and other such tournaments here on the East Coast.

Overall the idea of the update is to prevent the pulling of hooks on game fish with "soft mouths". Both my tournament pro-staff and myself have been fishing these for well over a year and the results have been excellent with our original washer update.

One example of how you can set the drag, is 2 LBS Drag @ Strike, and 4 LBS of Drag @ Full, or 5 and 10, etc. Once the update is in place there are a lot of different options. This update will not significantly affect the max drag on the reel, this is a common question that comes up often. Our tests indicated a loss of one half to 2 LBS of the max drag setting. All of the LX reels that we tested out of the box had about 23 LBS of drag as per our scale at the maximum setting. For our applications we favor the Avet LX 6 over the other models, but that is just personal preference based on how we fish for these species, the other reels will perform just as good, with only a few differences, ie: weight, size, line capacity, retrieval speeds, etc. These differences have nothing to do with the updates, instead they are related to the characteristics of the individual models.

Some of you may have heard about this update through the use of a special cam. About 5 months after we commenced using the drag washers, this special cam was designed to achieve the same results. We have found that the cam is not the better of the two choices. The cams vary from cam to cam and at times will not provide the same results as the washers. Furthermore the cams will eliminate the first stop, aka "Live Bait"position, where the washers will not change that function. I pre-install the updates on not only the LX, but also the JX, MXL, MXJ, as well as the SX and the 2 speed versions of all the aforementioned Avet reel models. I classify them as either the Kingfish or the Sailfish tournament reels.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding the update. I have converted several reels for anglers at no charge. I will be happy to answer any specific questions you may have regarding my update. Please feel free to email or IM me. My email is Louis@bluemarlinchronicles.com
