Any information on night vision equipment

I am been searching recently to try to bring myself up to speed on the current generation 2-3 or the thermal imagining type of night vision gear but still find myself confused. We run so much at night I have often thought about purchasing something that will help us see in the dark and fog. Any thoughts or experience with this type equipment would be appreciated.
    Thank you

I checked out the older threads plus the video. Looks interesting at this time and going to look further into this. I am going to contact the company for additional information on Monday.
    Thanks

I was just at the Boston Boat show and I stopped by a booth that had Flir to take a look. It is cool as hell. In addition to the demos, they had one working at the time, and it was incredible how much detail you could see on it. I guess they said that the camera itself is around $7k, and depending on what type of electronics you have, you can probably use on of your other screens as the monitor.

I have used an ITT Gen 3 Starlight scope. The image is just a green version of daylight. When set up correctly you can read small print through the thing. The problem, as I understand it, is that since it requires light to work, it's not too good in fog just like your eyes are not too good in fog. I haven't had a chance to use it in fog yet, so I can't say firsthand. It does work somewhat in the infra-red range, but not like a thermal unit.

Thermal systems (IR) are supposed to be better in fog, but fog will dampen thermal signatures somewhat also, and the image quality is nowhere near as sharp. The next generation will be a combined unit that will display both thermal and optical. Probably about as good as it's going to get. You don't want to know what that's going to cost.

we do a lot of night time running, have always hated it.Put the FLIR on last summer, still dont like it but WAY more relaxed with it.Have not used it in the fog yet.Mine is hooked into one of my Navnets. Not cheap ,I figured it is about the same as my deductable if I hit something and take out my underwater gear.Tom

You should be able to get the flir for around 5k-6k a friend is currently getting it on his rig .As stated for marine applications thermal is the way to go unaffected by fog.
