when I get a few spare mins I will get you some measurements of the inserts, right now I am gettin ready to take the baby to get some 3 month pics for family. Thanks guys for all the great input!
Serprise I got your PM with the insert sizes I will try and get some molds made up soon. It will probably be after Memorial Day as I am slammed cleaning up other peoples messes at work. Here are some pics of a lure I threw together. Its called a Half Assed troller because the RTV I had to make molds with was shot so I used a pill bottle for the mold made a chuck and machined the end for the skirt. The insert was made by drilling a hole in between two 2x4s and pouring molten lead from a sinker around a brass tube. I held the sinker with vise grips and hit it with a propane torch. Then I covered it with elmers and glitter and put on the doll eyes. I drilled a small hole in the bottom of the script bottle for the tube so it was tight pushed in the insert poured in the resin and capped the bottle with the lid and a matching hole for the tube to center it. Like I said its half assed because when I got the RTV out and it was hard I figured lets see how we can do it with stuff around the house. When I get some new mold material I will post up pics with the proper molds and inserts. Oh yeah the skirt is a Boone from bass pro. I dont know if it will catch fish but it got me away from chores for awhile. Now if I could only find a damn boat!!!!!!
Hey thanks! That lure actually doesn't look bad at all I'd run it if it were pink and blue. Don't worry about the mold I am not in any hurry. I will post up some pics of my lures when I can get a day off work. Feels like all I do lately is work, eat, shit, sleep. Too bad the Navy doesn't pay overtime . Thanks again I'll have to hook you up with a Naval Hospital Guam t-shirt from my command.
Serprise - you can remove the bubbles by pouring the lure head down, they will rise to the back of the lure where you will not see them. You can also de-gas the resin before pouring the lure by first pouring it into a shallow container and blowing gently on the surface. The CO2 in your breath reduces the surface tension and the bubbles will break. A propane torch flame will do the same but move the falme real quick or you will scald the resin. I dont do the flame thing, too risky.
Thanks for the good words. It turned out alot better than I thought. I use castin' craft clear liquid plastic casting resin. Use when warm, over 70 F. I use 6 drops of catalyst per ounce of resin. Stay away from the 1 to 1 mixes they're too thick. Make sure everything is ready measure out the resin add the catalyst. stir for 60 seconds, dont stir real fast you'll add to many bubbles and make sure you get the stuff mixed up off the bottom. As soon as your done stirring pour into your mold put your centering cap on and just let it sit. Its thin enough at this point that any bubbles just float up and pop. I havent had any bubbles left yet. Make sure you let it cure out if you pull them to soon they'll feel rubbery and they'll fall apart
Alan I just noticed the link in your post is that your company? Those lures are amazing!!! Do you sell just the skirts? I really havent been able to find good quality skirts by themselves at a reasonable price this is a hobby for me and I have a very small budget to work with. Most of what I have found are pretty plain. Also how are they sized? I'd like to know what lengths and diameters are availlable. Any info you can share would be greatly appreciated...
yes, those are my lures I have been developing them over several years
I do not have the ability to retail the lures or skirts directly, there is a list to retailers on my site.
The skirts are usually listed by length by most sellers but that can be misleading to a lure maker as what is really important is the neck diameter, not length. It took me a while to source the skirts and I actually made the lures to fit the skirts rather than the other way round.
That leaded film can lure looks fine... Nothing wrong with that at all. Great running shape when the seas are broken up. I'd rig with more substantial terminal gear though for when Mr.Blue takes a shine to it!
Nauti, try Moldcraft - www.moldcraftproducts.com for their wrap-around skirting material - comes in several good colours and works real well
