Tom you may want to move this to the freshwater section.

More people with the info are liable to see it.

Do they stock salmon in Michigan? They used to stock Lake Erie with salmon back in the day, but just do steelhead now. A salmon catch in Erie happens occasionally but is really rare anymore. I was just wondering why they are so prevalent in Lakes Ontario and Michigan but not Erie I'm assuming its strictly due to stocking.

The answer is that Erie is much shallower and warmer than the other Great Lakes. The Walleye is king there. Of the other 4 Great Lakes, I believe Michigan is the best. Used to mate on a boat out of Leland in the 80's and we would routinely catch 500 lbs of Salmon a day between 2 trips. Check out www.captjackduffy.com for more info on this great fishery.

They used to have tremondous salmon fishery, but when the lake was dirty they werent sustaining themselves without restocking so the DEP from Ohio PA and NY decided to concentrate on the steelhead and laketrout. I dont know about walleye being king, while they are a very sought after fish, they have to compete with perch, lake trout, and the small mouth bass fishery which is unbelievable with 5-6 pound fish being common. I would have to guess while the smallest the perch is most likely the most sought after fish on Erie with more pounds being taken than the walleye.
