    8-23 Grouper Cheeks Anyone??

Me and the boys started putting together a trip on Friday Afternoon for a little Sunday bottom bumping in the Gulf, it started off with just a couple of guys, then a neighbor and his kids wanted to jump on, then my young ones started showing an interest in the offshore excursion, next thing you know it was like a head boat going out for a half day trip. I figured the kids would back out at the early tone of the alarm clock, and good ole dad yelling “Get Up, were gonna be burning daylight” we’ll that was an incorrect conclusion. Everybody was up and ready at 5:30, a little groggy but none the less they were up!

The weather was little questionable with winds coming right at the pointy end and a few dark clouds roaming around off the beach, so we decided to back off the original plan to run the 40+ miles to one of my favorite fish stores. Plan “B” pull out the book and take a look, we dug out a number that has produced fish in the past. We almost make it to the number, when the bottom machine lights up with a killer show of chevrons like stalagmites coming up from the sea floor. Now the adrenaline is flowing we make a quick circle back around and the orders start coming out, “Hurry, get some baits down!!” The first pass zip, pluck and well you know! The second pass, crushed again, with the wind now laid and the sees calmed, out comes the hook. The boat pulls tight on the rode and perfection. All rods in and the mayhem begins.

Within moments grunts & moans start from all sides of the boat, “Fish on, I got one, me too, Dad Help I can’t reel it!!” The kids would take turns, fishing and throwing up over the side, then reach over and grab another rod and fire a bait back down, “You guys ok?” I’d ask. Each one with the same answer “Oh yes, I fill better now.” For two solid hours the fish seemed to try and chew the bottom out of the boat.

We ended up with a limit of red grouper, some nice mango snapper, sunburns, sore arms and backs and off course “Memories.”

Thanks for the Welcome aboard. I reside in Tampa FL, however I fish the East Coast, bahamas, Mexico, and we just fished the Pirates Cove Tourney a couple weeks back, man what an awesome fishery. In fact we left the boat up there and we'll probably be back Labor Day weekend if the weather permits.

This site seems killer, and hopefully we'll be posting a ton more in the future.
