I am so sick and tired of people on the left saying that Republican's don't have a plan or never had a plan. The fact of the matter is that Republican's have addressed this issue many times and the leftist Democrat Socialists don't want any part of any solution that doesn't shift more power and money to government and include punitive legislation against insurance companies- there always has to be a whipping boy. For God's sake people, do you blame the cashier at the grocery store for the cost of your groceries? It's the same damn thing. Insurance is a business that has to make a profit in order to provide the benefits that it is contractually obligated to provide to it's policy holders. Forgive them for trying to be prudent with your premium dollars. I would much rather negotiate with a company that I can ultimately fire versus a government beaurocrat that doesn't give a shit whether you live or die and can take everything you have if you don't comply with their demands. Furthermore, insurance companies have to (by law) act responsibly with your money. They are not only accountable to their policy holders, they are accountable to their state and federal governments and also their investors. Government agencies are not accountable to anyone and we are not allowed to look into their books. Whatever report they might provide to other agencies may be available under the freedom of information act but that's it.
Unfortunately, the cost of healthcare isn't as simple as liberals would have us think. Their solution is primarily choke off the insurance industry and then the government will ultimately get all of the money. The cost of insurance is a symptom and not the illness.
1) When you have indigents using the ER as if it were the local clinic, you have a costly problem.
2) When the hospital's ER is reimbursed at a net loss by Medicaid for those patients getting treated for a stubbed toe or head cold, you have a costly problem.
3) When family physicians and dentists can't take patients on Medicaid because they can't absorb the loss, you have a costly problem.
4) When you have exorbitant waiting periods for approved procedures from the VA and Medicaid, you have a costly problem.
5) When physicians shell out a significant portion of their earnings in medical malpractice just to protect themselves from the "Johnny Edwards" type lawyers who will fabricate something from nothing, you have a costly problem.
6) When you have ne'r do wells who understand that there are plenty of Johnny Edwards type lawyers who will take their case win/ lose/ or draw, you have a costly problem.
7) When our emergency rooms and hospitals have to treat uninsured and/ or illegals who don't have an ability to pay for that treatment with the same level of care as someone with good insurance, we have a costly problem.
8) State of the art medicine is expensive to begin with. I think most people seeking care want the best that money can buy and would prefer not to go backwards in quality of treatment. Unfortunately, too many people want to have someone else pay for their treatment rather than assume any degree of personal responsibility...in any facet of their life.
Now all of these above listed problems exist as we speak. You only hear the liberals blaming the insurance companies for the healthcare crisis and yet it appears to me that the government and tort lawyers seem to be of equal or greater responsibility. The reason our premium dollars are as high as they are is so the physicians and hospitals can recoup the losses incurred from the government making healthcare access or reimbursement too difficult. They are also as high as they are because doctors have to cover their collective asses from the people looking to make a quick buck on someone who they deem is able to afford to shell out big bucks for their over-inflated issues.
Now the Republican solution short and sweet (original date of June, 2009, revised Oct, 2009) are below with a link to a more in depth discussion of these solutions included.
“We first released our health care plan in June, and over the last six months, we have introduced at least eight bills that, taken together, would implement this blueprint. You can go right now to healthcare.gop.gov and get all the details, but for now, I just want to share with you four ideas Republicans have proposed:
· Number one: let families and businesses buy health insurance across state lines;
· Number two: allow individuals, small businesses, and trade associations to pool together and acquire health insurance at lower prices, the same way large corporations and labor unions do today;
· Number three: give states the tools to create their own innovative reforms that lower health care costs.
· Number four: end junk lawsuits that contribute to higher health care costs by increasing the number of tests and procedures that physicians sometimes order not because they think it's good medicine, but because they are afraid of being sued.
“These are four smart, fiscally-responsible reforms that we can implement today to lower costs and expand access at a price our nation can afford. Again, you can learn more about these and all the health care initiatives Republicans have supported by visiting healthcare.gop.gov.
Please change the argument from "Republicans didn't do anything" to "Money greedy liberals didn't like any Republican solutions to healthcare because their ideas didn't demonize an entire industry and drag the rest of the country further down the road of socialism".
