Winning is ‘Contagious’ at IFC Sailfish Tournament; Team Kalex Wins Gold Cup
ISLAMORADA, Florida Keys — Captain Brian Cone led Contagious anglers Mike Hartley of Key Largo, Fla., and Bill Keller of Islamorada, Fla., to release seven sails and take the $25,000 championship of the Islamorada Fishing Club’s Sailfish Tournament that ended Jan. 27.
Second place went to Relentless with Islamorada’s Captain Paul Ross at the helm. Anglers Fenton Langston of Key Largo and Jimmy Hendrix of Tavernier, Fla., released four fish, placing second on time.
Third place, also with four releases, went to Last Dance with Captain Robert Collins at the helm. Anglers were Erik Akins and Matt McLean, both of Naples, Fla.
The Kalex team took top honors in the Florida Keys Gold Cup Championship with a total of 23 sailfish releases over the series’ three tournaments. Team Kalex scored three releases at the Islamorada Fishing Club’s Sailfish Tournament, 15 at the Islamorada Sailfish Tournament and five sails at the Cheeca Lodge Presidential Sailfish Tournament.
Fifty anglers fishing on 22 boats released 55 sailfish from 76 hookups during the Islamorada Fishing Club’s Sailfish Tournament.
The 2011-12 Gold Cup Series competition kicks off with the Islamorada Sailfish Tournament, set for Dec. 1-4.
