I have been fishing in S.Florida since I could walk, and I am 38! Now I have fished canals in nieghborhoods, deep in the glades, 10,000 islands, Flamingo, the Key's, and of course my back yard, Key Biscayne. I love top water fishing, I think it is the most exciting fishing there is. BUT, I have only caught one fish with a top water lure that has rattles in it!! I know that may sound strange, but true. I have come home, drilled out the rattle balls, epoxied up the lure, gone out the next day or so and killed them! I don't know why?? But now it seems you can't find a top water without a freaking rattle in it! Zara Spooks were always my ace, without rattles, but know it seems they all have them. Am I alone, and the only person who does not have luck with rattles in lures??

Good question. I hope some others will share thier opinions.
I have some insight for you to chew on...give me till tommorrow, I have some pics to show you. Can't remember the model names of the Rattling lures I like the sound of, but will look when I get home.
I worship the top water bite, but don't like the rattles myself.
Have not caught fish on plugs with rattles, but that probably has to do with my lack of confidence in them. Top dogs and Jrs from Mirrolure have no rattles. I like to use them.

i too am a fan of the Top Dog and Top Dog Jr. plugs made by Mirrolure. they dont have a rattle, per se....more like one large shot pellet that rides in a channel inside the plug. it makes more of a dull, monotonous clicking sound rather than a raucous rattle. i dont care for loud, high pitched rattling plugs. Mirrolure also makes the She and He Dog plugs that have high pitched rattles.....i dont like them.
i live and die for topwater speckled trout bites....dont mind that little gem in the cupholder....stupid plug couldnt catch a fish in a barrel .
I am glad to see I am not the only one who is not a fan of rattles. I fish alotta creeks & canals in the glades, being such a small body of water, I think the rattles scare them more than anything. Now I understand if your on a big flat trying to bring fish in, however I think when they get closer, some get a little lure shy from them. Bass Pro has a X-caliber mullet top water lure, my first one I ever bought had no rattles, now they all come with rattles, and I drill them out, and I catch fish with them???
