Tampa Bay Action

The soon to arrive new moon is creating some nice afternoon tides. Tampa Bay eastside shore was home again for On The Mark Charters late Friday. We fished the end of the outgoing and turn of the incoming tides. The snook and jacks were staged off the mangroves in deeper potholes. Snook were easy to spot when tossing chummies as you can’t miss the tell tale sound of a snook popping a chummies. White baits that were scarce in this area a week ago are back and in a big way.

Again I got white baits at the Skyway, one toss and I had a net full. Almost too many to lift onboard! Something I have noticed is the lack of Mackerel at either end of the Skyway bridge or ship channel. Seems like they moved in and they disappeared 3 weeks ago. Typically its commons to see mackerel boiling the surface in numerous locations along the ship canal.

Back to the action, the first bat full of chummies found numerous takers. I had my angler’s toss where the snook took the chummies and it was game on. The trip was a short one but the action was non stop. We moved less than two hundred yards the entire time. I love it when the game plan works so easily. Jacks where mixed and at times took baits away from the snook. Mostly school size snook 20-22” and jacks 2-3 pounds. Not bad for a 3 hour 6-9 charter.

Captain Little Jim reported a large school of redfish on the flats in lower Tampa Bay eager to chew along with several beach snook up to 36”.

Summer is here as is the heat and humidity. Staying hydrated is very important. Nothing works better than water. Stay away from soda and beer. Another way to beat the heat is start early or try night fishing. Mid day I like to take a wash cloth and open the ice chest spigot and wet with ice cold water. Chill Towels also makes a great, refreshing and handy product that does not need ice. I like to place it in ice to really chill the towel. Great for hours! Check them out at www.chilltowels.com .
