Another fantastic week of beautiful weather and good fishing conditions made lots of fun out on the water. A good variety of fish for us with the warmer December this year is much better than those cold fronts of last year. But as 2012 begins, the first cold front of the new year promises to cool things off for a couple days so get ready to dress warmer this week.

Keith, Cai and two of my favorite anglers, Turner and Frank, were out a couple days this week. The kids had fun with a variety of fish that kept them busy. We had great weather and lots of fun out on the water. Graham and his family were out on another beautiful day and caught trout, jacks, ladyfish, a couple nice croakers and two nice slot redfish. Mike and Rick had a super nice weather day with very little wind and it allowed us to fish all over the river. Rick lost his chance at a nice snook when it took him around the docks, but made up for it with two nice redfish, mackerel, trout and a variety of other fish that day. The fishing has been good out there!

As long as the warmer days continue, the trout will be hitting on the flats in three to five feet of water along with the usual jacks and ladyfish. Deadly Combos, live baits and top water on calm days can get you some good action. Redfish have been in two to three feet of water and we have found many of them hanging under the mangroves. DOA shrimp, live baits or CAL grubs will all work on a redfish. Most of our reds have been right in the slot range.

The inlet has been loaded with mackerel, bluefish, ladyfish, jacks and blue runners on the high tide. Shiny lures have worked best on them. There have been some nice size mackerel out there lately. The pompano bite is still on the slow side, but the coming cold front should bring them in to the flats soon. We have skipped a few, but it has been slower here so far. Structure, docks and bridges have held black drum and sheephead. It's that time of year for those fish and live or dead shrimp usually work well when fishing for them. I have heard some good reports of nice size flounder around the jetties and sand flats of the inlet this past week. It should improve as well in the next week.

2011 was a wonderful year out on the water and I hope that 2012 is an even better year for everyone. Have fun and get out fishing!
