The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council has backed off on a temporary closure of the recreational and commercial red snapper fishery but refused to take it off the table as a potential measure to end overfishing for the species. Meeting earlier this month in Wilmington, N.C., council members said traditional measures, such as tightening size and bag limits and spawning season closures, won't work. The council is considering time/area closures in a future rule amendment.
