Snook are on the move!
Snook are finally on the move out of the rivers and back Bays. Spent last weekend "looking" from the tower and traveled from Sanibel up to Boca Grande and back down Matlacha Pass. Ended up finding the majority of our Snook in the mouth of the Caloosahatchee River from Shell Island to Cape Coral Bridge.
Whitebait and threads were the bait of choice and were easy to locate in about 4 feet of water off Tarpon Bay on Sanibel. Four throws of the net and we were set for the day! The Snook were very agressive with most of the fish we caught runnning over 25 inches with a few "pigs" thrown in. The fish were consistently 10 to 15 feet off the shoreline nose into the current, concentrated on points, bars and canal entrance.
Also caught several huge snapper and a fat flounder or two.
I would imagine the fish will remain in the mouth of the river until we start to see the rains pick up and a release of fresh water from the locks. Tarpon are hanging out at and around the Cape Coral Bridge and the larger canal systems with many fish over 100 pounds.
If you want to put kids on fish its hard to beat the trout fishing at Red Fish Pass along the rock wall or the beach. Many of these fish are running well over 20 inches with some real large females mixed in. It's a great time of year to be fishing S.W. FLorida.
