Sea squared Charters, Marathon 8-21
12 bugs for Jason and me

Man oh man, the lobstering has been off the charts so far this year!

After our morning charter, Jason and I popped out to a couple of our honey holes in Florida Bay to snag us some tasty crustaceans for dinner.
It took us longer to get to and from than it did to actually catch our lobster. We hit three holes and had our limit of 12 spiny lobster, all in the pound-and-a-half class. Yum!
Kaylen’s first fish!

A quick trip to the reef was just what the McZeal family wanted.

Visiting Marathon Florida Keys from Houston for the first time, Marcellus and Jeudy McZeal, their daughter Kaylen and Jeudy’s mother, Sovawn, wanted to experience fishing on the only living coral reef in North America.
We popped out to one of my favorite snapper spots, and ten-year-old Kaylen set to reeling in one yellowtail after another, all 13- to 14-inch fish. The adults mostly sat back, enjoyed the scenery and watched Kaylen have fun with the snappers!
Sam and his buddies catch big sharks

They just don’t see toothy critters like these back in the suburbs of Pittsburgh!

Sam Rodgers and his dad, Don, have fished with SeaSquared Charters many, many times. For this outing, Sam brought two of his buddies to the family’s vacation home in Florida Keys for some shark wrangling.

For some reason, we’ve been seeing some really large lemon sharks at our personal aquarium in Florida Bay. Today, they were all six and seven feet in length. These big ones don’t do a lot of acrobatics, but they sure do run fast and far!

The guys caught ten in all, each one giving a 15- to 20-minute fight, and some taking 250 yards of line on the first run.

One of the guys had never been on the ocean before, had only ever caught a bluegill and was deathly afraid of sharks. It was quite entertaining for all of us to watch him do battle with the sharks!

SeaSquared Charters practices 100% catch-and-release shark fishing using non-harmful circle hooks. All sharks are released unharmed.
