The SeaSquared hosted nine separate groups last week from Florida to Wisconsin and just about everywhere in between.

We fished offshore, the reef, the Seven Mile Bridge and the bay. Our anglers caught gaffer dolphin, blackfin tuna, mangrove and yellowtail snapper, Florida pompano, hogfish, porgy and all the mackerel species. Two groups went shark fishing and released numerous lemons up to about 6 feet in length.

We hope you enjoy the new fishing report newsletter and look forward to your feedback!

Tight lines!

The dolphin were running pretty close inshore, so that was my first target. We found a large school under some weeds, and the crew was just amazed by their flashing blue/green/yellow colors in the water. Of course, my aim was to put as many of them in the boat as possible. We put eight nice size gaffers – and a bonus blackfin tuna in the cooler when the call came to head back to the marina.

As much as I don’t like leaving fish, I’m glad the Revesz family experienced just a little of the fantastic fishing we have here in the Middle Florida Keys!

We first went to the patch reefs where the crew put together a nice catch of good size yellowtail snapper. From there, we moved to Hawk Channel and the gang released some small grouper and caught mangrove snapper and Spanish mackerel. Plenty for a tasty dinner of Florida Keys snapper!

The Al-Saghir Family

Three young anglers of the Al-Saghir family, from Jacksonville, along with Mom and Dad were treated to quite the variety of fish species during their half day charter.

We fished in Hawk Channel and they released some small grouper but also landed keepr hogfish, mangrove and lane snapper, Spanish mackerel and bluefish.

The Foust Group

When Kevin Foust called to book his charter, he expressed an interest in shark fishing because it looks like we do that in calmer waters. Calm waters are what they got. So calm, you couldn't distinguish the sky from the water - there was no horizon. Calm waters are what they got. So calm, you couldn’t distinguish the sky from the water – there was no horizon.

The fishing, however, was anything but calm!

Kevin, his wife Amy, their son Stone and Stone’s girfriend Jordan, weren’t quite sure what they got themselves into but they knew they weren’t in Winslow Indiana anymore. In our four-hour trip, the group caught and released 10 toothy lemon sharks ranging in length from four to seven feet.

One of the sharks we caught had a tag from the research work I did with the University of Miami last September. Pretty cool.

Catch-and-release shark fishing adventures are a ton of fun for anglers of all ages and abilities. We’ve had shark wranglers on the boat from 7 to 90 years old.

The Kazdan and Weber Families

I have to admit, I've never had quite the combination of fish caught as I did with the Kazdan and Weber families on this outing to Hawk Channel.
I have to admit, I’ve never had quite the combination of fish caught as I did with the Kazdan and Weber families on this outing to Hawk Channel.

Scott Kazdan and his sons, Matthew and Marc, along with the Weber men – John Sr., John Jr. and John III – put an amazing catch together is just a half day of fishing. They caught countless mangrove snapper, a horde of Spanish mackerel, king mackerel to 15 pounds and a whopping 12 Florida pompano! They actually caught 16 pompano, but we kept just 12 – more than enough for a feast! Oh yeah, they also released a bunch of grouper.

Scott and Marc have fished with me before. They are both avid and aggressive anglers and I can always count on lots of fishing cleaning time at the end of our trip. This outing was no different and a great way to celebrate Marc’s confirmation. Good going guys!

The Marter Crew

We hit a couple of my wrecks in the Gulf and had quite the variety of fish for them to see up close and personal. We even had a huge loggerhead turtle checking us out. The crew – Marc, Sheri, Shelby and Ally – released some nice gag grouper, but brought back plenty of 14- to 16-inch mangrove snapper to enjoy cooked at Porky’s Bayside BBQ.

The Weisman Family
Sea squared Charters, Marathon 4-5-7.jpg
The extended Wiesman family enjoyed some fun fishing with tasty rewards during their vacation in Marathon.

The crew from Tampa included Neil and Karolyn Weisman, their children 6 year-old Aaron and 4 year-old Madison, plus Uncle Michael Weisman. With small children on board I always head to one of my calmer spots where I know the action will keep their attention.

We fished near the Seven Mile Bridge. The anglers released a couple of short hogfish and small grouper but put together a tasty catch of large three-pound porgy along with mangrove and yellowtail snapper.

I always enjoy having kids on the boat, especially when they are as well behaved and into the fishing as Aaron and Madison were. Can’t wait to have them back!

The Verdick Crew

Dan Verdick, from Elk River MN, and his 9 year-old son, Ben, fished with us during their vacation to Marathon Florida Keys last year. This time, Dan brought his lovely wife and daughter along, Colene and 14 year-old Hannah.

With the wind kicking up its heels this morning, I opted to fish one of my favorite calm spots near the Seven Mile Bridge, and the fish did not disappoint us! The rod-bending commenced almost immediately upon putting the chum in the water. The crew released a bunch of small grouper and brought back 25 snapper, including their limit of mangroves plus some yellowtails.

We had a pesky barracuda dining on some of our snapper. He made a bad choice, however, when he took a snapper on Ben’s line rigged with wire! Ben did battle with the toothy critter and when we brought it in the boat it was nothing short of about 4 and a half feet of angry fish!
