The king mackerel fishing continues to be very good as well as amberjack. We are starting to catch a few cobia sight-fishing and few off the bottom. The big lemon and sand tiger sharks should be here any day. We did catch one big sand tiger a few trips back. The kings and amberjack should remain strong through February. Cobia fishing will only get better with the largest cobias typically coming in at the end of February. By March through April, Cobia fishing should be wide open!
Cobia Fishing 101
While we do catch a few cobia year-round, February - April is when they migrate to where we can sight fish for them. In the afternoon, as the surface water temperature rises a degree or two, the cobia tend to come to the top. The best way to target these fish is to ride around looking for packs of them. Cobia also like to swim with Manna Rays (Cobia Hotels) and Leatherback Sea Turtles because these large creatures tend to stir up shrimp and crabs underneath them. Once we see a pack of fish, we cast bucktail jigs or live-bait at them. When we see a Manna Ray or a Sea Turtle, we cast ahead of them to see if there any cobia's underneath them. Whenever we see a Manna Ray, however, they almost always have cobia around. Cobia fishing does require some patience, but once you spot the fish, the excitement is well worth the wait!!!
