[Fishing Report]

This week was a classic example of why an angler needs to be flexible this time of year, weather has a huge impact on fishing. Early in the week, the inshore Gulf of Mexico was calm and Spanish mackerel and false albacore were easy targets. A severe front moved through on Friday morning, but despite drizzle and 20+ NW winds, action was great in protected areas.



Gary and Wil Rutenschroer from Cincinnati, OH fished 2 mornings with me this week. Early in the week they caught speckled trout to 20", Spanish mackerel and ladyfish near Bird Key and macks and ladyfish in Big Pass on jigs. The weatherman made things challenging on Friday, but Gary caught a "slam" (snook, trout, and red in one day). We started out in Phillippi Creek catching several jacks and mangrove snapper and a snook. A move up to the protected waters near Otter Key resulted in a redfish, a bunch of nice sized speckled trout, an 18" flounder, a mackerel, and some ladyfish.



Sarasota resident Ed Stidd took his son Chris and grandson Kyler out fishing. It was a birthday present for Kyler, who just turned 5. Ladyfish were thick on the New Pass bar, hitting jigs and shrimp. The inshore reefs provided steady action on large Spanish mackerel and a false albacore on pilchards and Rapala X-raps.



The speckled trout bite was excellent on Saturday morning, my two anglers landed quite a few short fish and a half dozen trout in the slot (released unharmed, trout season is closed Nov-Dec) to 21", a Spanish mackerel, and a bunch of ladyfish on shrimp and pilchards near Bird Key
