Saltwater Fishing Seminar Set for Islamorada Jan. 28

ISLAMORADA, Florida Keys — National and regional angling experts are to gather in Islamorada, Fla., Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012, to discuss Florida Keys sport-fishing techniques when the 25th edition of the Salt Water Sportsman National Seminar Series opens.

Regarded as one of the nation's most popular educational courses on saltwater sport-fishing tactics, the seminar is to take place at Coral Shores High School's Performing Arts Theater at mile marker 89.9 on the Overseas Highway.

The 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. event is to be hosted by George Poveromo, host of "George Poveromo's World of Saltwater Fishing" on Versus, and editor-at-large for Salt Water Sportsman magazine. Co-host is the magazine’s editor, John Brownlee, an Islamorada resident.

Additional scheduled faculty includes a number of Keys captains and guides such as Nick Stanczyk, who helped pioneer daytime swordfishing off the Keys; Jim Sharpe, a Lower Keys skipper and author of "Dolphin ... The Perfect Gamefish”; Jimmy Gagliardini, noted Marathon-based authority on fishing bridges, reefs and offshore waters; Robert “RT” Trosset, a veteran Key West–based light-tackle guide excelling at fishing wrecks and prominent bottom structures for pelagics and bottom fish, and Matt Bellinger, an Islamorada flats and light-tackle backcountry guide.

Also slated to present are Bill Carson, reef-fishing specialist; Harry Vernon III, reef- and offshore-fishing pro, and Ron Schatman, an authority on trolling for wahoo, dolphin and marlin.

"The Florida Keys are one of the world's greatest sport-fishing destinations," said Poveromo. "We’ll feature veteran skippers who will share tips to make participants' days on the water more productive and enjoyable."

Seminar topics include daytime swordfishing, top secrets for running and gunning for dolphin and how to target trophy dolphin by moon phases, catching jumbo Keys yellowtail, effective reef fishing, wreck fishing, no-nonsense techniques for blackfin tuna, jigging for wahoo, tactics for fishing channels and bridges for tarpon, snook and big snapper; trolling the bridges and more.

A ticket to the seminar series costs $55 and includes a course textbook, one-year subscription or extension to Salt Water Sportsman, one Roffers Ocean Fishing Forecast Analysis, one bottle of OrPine Wash & Wax, a spool of Sufix fishing line, a bottle of Star Tron fuel treatment, a discount coupon from Captain Harry's Fishing Supply and opportunities to win angling-oriented door prizes.

The names of all attendees at the Keys seminars are to be entered into a drawing for a fishing vacation as well as an opportunity to win a Mako 184 center console boat.

The Keys session is to be supported by Florida Keys Fishing Tournaments Inc., a sport-fishing promotional advisory board mostly funded by the Monroe County Tourist Development Council.
