    Redfish and Trout Fishing tips

I am new to saltwater fishing. I am a long time freshwater bass fisherman. I live in the Tampa Bay area of Florida and have started fishing the Gulf Flats. Does anyone have suggestions on best tides to fish for Reds and Trout. Also any ideas on best bait or lures. I am a very fast learner so give me some tips. Thanks.

After many years of inshore fishing on both coasts of Fl, I have decided that there is no answer to best baits, lures or tackle. Just like bass fishing, what works great one day may not attract a fish the next. If I were just starting out, I would consider using a guide for a trip or two, pay close attention to everything, and ask questions.

I live just south of you in Sarasota. I'd be more then happy to talk if you'd like. You can contact me through www.anglersystems.com

Once on the site check out our Viper Tackle Inshore System as well as our Inshore Section. We carry only lures we have fished and know catch fish!

I have not fished very much in Florida, but I fish quite frequently around Morehead City and Cape Lookout. As for baits I use a speck rig, or jig with grubs, the darker the water color the darker the grub I use, when I have ideal conditions I use what we call up here a christmas tree grub. I also use gulp shrimp they are very good baits, but everything hits it and they can get expensive, buck a pop. As for tides I try to hit the outgoing tide, not sure if water temp affects you down there.

    Things to try:

Popping cork with live bait or soft plastics

Jighead with soft plastic..buy a few packs of Gulp Shrimp. New penny or pearl are my favorites. Doa's are good aswell.

Jerkbaits work great in the flats, i use a wideshank weighted worm hook.Rigged weedless.

Spinnerbaits..Strikeking Redfish Magic is a good one.

Topwaters..mirrolures,zara spooks, a spit'n image plug is the money at times.

    I prefer a falling tide.

i dont live in florida or fish florida much, but the baits listed above will catch drum, flounder, and trout about anywhere!

    Good luck
