Each year my Missus gets Columbus Day off and we share that as our special fishing day. 20+kts Kept Deep C tacked to the dock so it was a ride to our local pier for some good ol fun.
This pier like many around the country plays host to a wide variety of folks. You have your retirees that gather there as a social thing. You have your fish hungry local "sharpies". You have every culture represented all on those boards. A mini America of sorts.
I could read a number of eddies and breaks that might hold fish but so could the sharpies. I knew enough not to encroach on their spots. Notches carved in the rails for rod rests almost with initials to declare turf.
We walked out farther and found a spot to our selves with some promise to the spots out front of them. With the wind comming straight down the deck we could work both sides as well. I loaded shrimp bits and sand fleas and let fly.
Within seconds we were in fish. All kinds of fish. First to play were small jack crevalles...
Soon after that we caught the first of dozens of small bluefish... We were not targeting them but they sure found us. A particularly animated Vietnamese guy named of all things, Paul, gladly accepted them as donations to his cooler.
In between the waves of them came another neat visitor. Again in mass. I wanted to cry at the puny throw back size but the numbers were still there. Tomorrows dinners were sent back to grow up over and over. Each one drawing giggles and grins from the missus. I can't ever remember catching so many cobia! Not a keeper in the bunch but still a ball!
We filled in the list with mojarra, snappers, grunts, blue runners and finally we added two delicious ones to our pile. The holy grail of pier partiers along our coast.
Pompano could be called "addictive". Catch one and you gotta have just one more...
Any way... Before we knew it the sun had gone from east to west and it was time to go home. I'd like to thank my lovely missus for the great company today. And thank the fish for cooperating and giving some memorable and enjoyable hours...
She needed some time working out on her fishing game. She goes fishing in Mazatlan Mexico in a couple weeks with some of her co workers ...
Just so good to see her have a good time...
