    Peacock bass / snook

Are fast action rods a bad choice for peacock bass and snook?

I plan to try some ponds I know have peacock bass, but snook I'll try in a river... no idea if I'll find any

I bought two cheap 6' shimano combos months ago and when I was taking a look yesterday noticed they were fast action

I also bought a 6'6" medium action rapala combo

Jer, Here in Miami I learned a secret for peacocks (butterfly) RED,RED,RED. Here we use the Red Rat"L"traps. I find a medium action rod to a heavy stiff rod work well. The reason is because I work the lure eraticly as I can for about 5 cranks on the reel, I mean snatching the lure through the water, then stopping (suspending lures work best) for about 3 seconds, then start again and BAM! You should be fine with what you have. My biggest was about 9+ pounds and pulled my canoe of the shore. That was with a live shiner, my second almost the same size was on a "POP R" with an orange mouth. They are one of the greatest, hard hitting fresh water fish there is!

Muddy, 9+ lbs on top water = priceless. You probably still remember the strike to this day. I agree the best hardest fighting freshwater fish out there.

    muddy,
I just moved down here from Virginia and am dying to catch a peacock bass. I'd be forever grateful if you'd show me the ropes. I don't have my boat down here yet and am just trying to figure out the area. The fishing opportunities are a little overwhelming. Anyway if you happen to have a spot on an upcoming trip, I'd love to go.

    Thanks.

No problem. I have a canal I grew up on that has some of the biggest peacock bass in it. What area do you live in?? I am leaving for the Key's tommorow (Sunday) so it will be at least a week before I get back to ya.
