    peacock bass

I just moved down to Miami and am staying at a friend's in Ft Lauderdale. He's got a pond behind his house and I asked him whether there were any fish in it, he said he wasn't sure. I walked out back and saw the shallow end loaded with these things sitting on their spawning beds. WTF those are peacock bass. Well I grabbed a rod and a curly tail grub and tossed it to one of the nests and immediately one of the bass grabbed it. After a short fight I landed it, snapped a pic with my first peacock bass and released it. I caught 3 more as well as a couple of largemouths. I might, might actually begin to like Miami, though it may take a while.

Congrats on your first peacock bass and thanks for sharing the story and pictures with us!

I've only caught tiny fish using bamboo rods but I plan to try and catch peacock bass soon

Seaweasel, wasn't that a fun fight? I love the way those fish fight to the very end. You should try topwater when they get off their beds. They are a blast.

yeah those fish are fun. They jump and go all over the place and I can't get over the colors and how each one seems to have a different hump or coloration or spots or something. Now to try to catch a snook. I saw them the other night but couldn't get'm to bite.

Slow down there seaweasel, there will be plenty of time for fishing in So.Fla. I just got back from the Key's. If ya want a snook, The time is coming up. I can tell you where to go off the road if ya don't have a boat, crap, a canoe will do. A little hint is if you see grasshoppers or frogs on the road in the Everglades (and you will soon) go snooooking!

I'm not sure if I understood what you mean by "transplanted", but peacock bass is originally from the Amazon region

Yes they are transplants. They were intruduced to stop the dreaded South American Talaipia/Sicklet/trash fish that started there lives in fish tanks years ago then were dumped into local canals along with the Hydrilla that started the same way. The weeds and the fish were choking our canals and eating the local/native species I.E. the Largemouths babies. So let's intruduce the species that eats both... The Peacock for the Talaipia and the Carps for the Hydrilla. Thats why when they are one the bed (peacocks) and you drop a bare hook down, look out. The world record is 29 #'s caught in the Rio Negro river,
