    Monster Snook and Tarpon 11/5/10

    Posted: 05 Nov 2010 08:41 PM PDT

We got our first big cold front of the year last night and the fish
hunkered down this morning. I had my bait pen loaded with pilchards
and bought shrimp as back up for the morning trip. The winds were
blowing 20knts from the northwest, water was filthy and the fish would
not bite for me. I tried looking for tarpon first thing, mullet were
there but no tarpon. Then I tried the back and couldn't get a bite
going. Tried docks for snook and caught three and missed a half dozen.
    We did find
some tarpon, but time was running out and the other boat was already
in. My afternoon trip was at 130 and I told Shayne the tarpon bite
should be good so we will give it an hour and if it's slow we will go
in. After getting mullet we found tarpon instantly and ended up
hooking five and getting one 60lb fish to the boat. He also caught
this monster snook on a big mullet. After a slow morning it felt good
to get back on some nice fish.

Wow what a way to end a month. October will go down as one of the best
tarpon months ever in my books. The fish were on the beaches, passes
and back bays all around Naples. We managed to get at least one tarpon
to the boat every trip out, some days 3 or 4 were boated. On Friday I
had Jeff and his brother and dad for a morning of tarpon fishing, I
new it was gonna be good. The beach had a swell from the north and the
water was stirred. These are two keys to the mullet moving down the
beach, and they were in full force. We followed them for three hours
up the beach catching two big tarpon and hooking 4 others, plus one
big shark. Then we came back to the south and hooked 4 more big
tarpon. We saw tarpon jumping three feet off the boat crashing mullet.
Sat morning I had a great client Paul and his son Paulie. This was a
day to remember as 12yr old Paulie hooked 8 tarpon and caught the boat
record tarpon that was close to 200lbs. He fought the fish for 1.5hrs
and did an unbelievable job. I will post the video when he sends it to
me. The tarpon fishing will probably slow after this weekends cold
front, but you never know. The snook fishing has been great and with
cooler water the trout and pompano fishing will improve. Book your
trips now as spots are filling quickly. This is Lawrie Thomas and
friends with a big tarpon late Thursday afternoon
