    Miami - Dec 1

My old man is heading down to miami to help a friend put a 29 phoneix in the water. Looks like the fishing has been pretty steady. What should I send him down with to use. I've got a couple TLD 25's that will work fine but what in the ways of bait? Or should I just be telling him to get some bally's once down there?

They probably want to get a crack at the sails, and some black fin if still around.. that is if it doesn't blow.. otherwise inshore stuff I guess. Whatever is the best bet I'll pass on the info.
    Thanks!

    Cheers,
    Doug

i would start with ballyhoos when he gets down there.. wouldnt buy them up here.. not worth it..

also i would purchase live bait from the guys down there or net your own or catch your own..

if you dont want to do the old kite fishing you can always slow troll these baits alive..

bridle them up on the bridge of the nose and send them in trolling against the current of the stream and knot it in and out of gear depending on the flow of the current.

this will allow them to swim make sure he puts some up in the riggers and make sure ithey are in free spool and very very loose in the riggers for them they get hit..

he can also troll naked ballyhoo and also you can skirt them if need be..

inshore they use mostly cigar minnows on the drift boats and just drift around..

my take it to always drift some bait on the bottom!!! always some fish floating around down there somewhere!!

good luck to him!! make sure you put up some pics!!

    you can call me anytime...

he can also catch all the live ballyhoos he wants including threadfin and pilchers in the port. the sea bouy holds lots of runners and speedos also. bait boats are easy to hit up also. the fishing has been great here this year so he will have fun. The tld 25's and some 20lb spinners are great. Ted

I appreciate the contact. I will let him know thats very generous of you. So send him with castnet and some sabiki rigs, and tell him to head to the sea bouy outside of the cut? or?? a little direction there would be helpful

and I will pack up the light rigs and send them down.

    I use this...

60lb mono leaders with 5/0 mustad regular 9174 hooks (sharpen them first at home and color them with magic marker so they don't rust!) with a 1/2 piece of copper wire to hold the hook in the lower jaw for pulling live ballyhoos around and 5 wire leaders with 5/0 eagle claw 084 bronze hooks for kite, dbl hook rigs for anything from sails to kings and wahoo.. they also go into people easy if your not carefull! take a piece of card board and get some 1' leaders out of 8lb test and make a loop at one end and tie #10 gold hooks on the other so he has some leaders ready for catching bait at the bouys. get him some sabiki hot hooks also for the pilchards and threadfins.. keep it simple .. a kite works great down here and they can just drift down the rip or 100 - 180' of water and have a blast. the dolphin have been all over from the reef to offshore

    Gah this is awesome info!

So if you could it would be of great help if you could get a little more depth on the rigging of a bally? Your just using the coper and wrapping it around the bottom jaw to keep the hook there?

Also your talking about tieing abunch of #10 golds to a section of line like a sabiki?
I have a bunch of sabiki rigs around.

Can they just slow troll or drift the 100-180 with out a kite or is it a better bet to get up a kite?

Thanks again a ton for all the help thus far.

live hoos short piece of copper wire...

bait hooks are individual 8 lb leaders with gold hooks (best to sort of cane pole the speedos to blue runner on single hooks), they can tip the sabikis with bait also though.. you can pull live hoos or live bait in the riggers , kites are also very good
