Marlin My Darlin Ft lauderdale report 12-23

Fort Lauderdale fishing and Wahoo. “Hoos your daddy?” The big “Hoos” are (still) here in good numbers and we are having some great fish hit the deck aboard Marlin My Darlin. Strong fights often coupled with the trademark rapid change of direction is the Wahoo’s style of fight, and they can take some line off a reel in a hurry.
We are targeting these fish on many days and are having very good results. We have caught a few trolling but the big boys have been on live bait. An abundance of the small Bullet Bonito in our area has made catching bait a breeze as of late. Sometimes we struggle catching livies but with all the little Bonito around it has been quick and painless to catch enough to fill our live wells and get right to it. Wahoo love them. We fish them 3 to 4 at a time with a typical spread of the surface ones drastically staggered at different lengths behind the boat and one fished deep on a downrigger. These are very active baits and when a big fish enters the spread to look things over they really get moving and can easily become tangled with one another at just the wrong time. On the Marlin My Darlin we use a double hook rig for Wahoo, the second or “ trailer hook” being a treble hook. This greatly increases the hookup ratio as Wahoo are notorious “short” biters and clip a bait in half very easily. Little drop back is required but Andrew always tries to give them a little time with the bait if we can beat them to the punch. And you have to be quick as the first bite is very fast when it happens, even though Hoos will often trail a bait or two in the spread for a while before climbing on. Who let the dogs out. Fort Lauderdale fishing is fun when these guys are around. “Hoos” your daddy?
