Thus far our Ft .Lauderdale fishing trips are showing mixed results. Since Hurricane Irene passed by to the East fishing has been erratic at best on the reefs. The Bonito are thinning out and though we still occasionally get into them well it has slowed considerably from the weeks past when they seemed to be everywhere. Kings today and yesterday were about as tough as it gets, with only a few hitting the box after a concentrated effort. Some Wahoo around. The bright spots seem to be the Billfish, with some Sails on the reef and also off the edge. Not thick by any ones definition but there are certainly a few around as we get a bite almost every trip. Almost all these Sailfish are under 35 pounds, which is a typical size for a Florida Sail even though many people think they are larger, and some are, but under 40 is the norm. Pictured is a typical late summer Sailfish in the mid 30s posing just prior to his release on Marlin My Darlin. Always fun to catch. Bonito strip baits combined with a bright sea witch type of lure for color and weight are getting the bites from these fish. The other Billfish making a showing are Swordfish, specialty charter due to the travel distance and also the tackle required. The last several days have provided some average sized fish (around 100 #) and that is good news and will hopefully continue. They get a lot bigger but a 100 pounder is always welcome. So there it is. The bread and butter species for our Fort Lauderdale fishing trips like the Kings. Bonito and football Blackfin Tunas are tough, yet there are more Billfish in town that expected. Clear mornings with showers typical before the afternoon is over has been our weather pattern for some time now. Record temp. for Miami today @ 94 degrees, and then the showers cooled it down.
