Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report, Ft. Lauderdale Fishing Charters / Wind Again

If you want to go on a Ft. Lauderdale Fishing Charter the good news is there are some fish in the area and biting. Bonito are available as well as some Kingfish on the inside reefs. We caught a really large Sailfish on our last trip and Mahi-Mahi are once again just off the edge and biting in the blue water which has been there. The rest of the news is that the wind that has been here for the better part of a month returned today and it is really blowing hard. Sea conditions are on a good day 3 to 5 feet and today the seas were 5 to 7 feet. That a pretty good sea and we always tell our clients what is waiting offshore. We did fish today and caught that big Sailfish and everybody had a good time except one. A good way to prepare yourself for a day offshore when it’s bumpy and you want to fish but are leery of seasickness is to get yourself an over the counter motion sickness medicine (such as Triptone or Dramamine) for less that $6. Try taking one before hitting the sack and then it will work on your system for the entire night. If the directions allow, and they typically do, you can take a second or even a half dosage the morning of your charter. This seems to work really well and we have had charters that swear by it. Every day isn’t postcard perfect and this wind is certainly causing some issues. We don’t get sick and the fish certainly don’t care, in fact they seem to be more active often times when the ocean is riled up. Hang in there. We are of course hoping for better conditions ASAP. We have had an unbelievable number of Jellyfish on the entire Southeast Florida coast for almost two months now. They are so thick that on some days when they pile up on a current edge, which holds them to that area as opposed to just floating along, it would seem you could literally walk on them. I added an interesting picture that shows just how thick they can be. It looks like a fat pink stripe in the water. They have been so thick that just up the coast in Jupiter/ Port St. Lucie at a nuclear power plant they restricted the flow of seawater into the cooling canal which helps regulate the temperature in the reactor, causing issues. A lot of these Jellyfish are actually passing by with the current but good numbers are still hitting the beaches. Watch where you step on the beach and if you join us offshore for a Ft. Lauderdale Fishing Charter the next couple of days, buckle up.

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report, Ft. Lauderdale Charter Fishing/ Mahi

Today was a good trip. Samantha, who is a first year Law student attending Nova University here in Ft. Lauderdale treated her boyfriend Joshua to a half day Ft. Lauderdale Fishing charter aboard Marlin My Darlin for his birthday. Joshua is an avid fisherman and has caught many different species. His list was missing a Mahi-Mahi, which he had never had an opportunity to land. We began the day trolling, which is an excellent way to locate Mahi-Mahi. We had good hopes for success as Mahi have been here for quite sometime now with the strong onshore winds and good current. But today was different. The current slowed and then stopped within a half hour of the beginning of our charter, and those strong onshore winds that have made it rough for what seemed like forever finally gave us a break during the night But the calm conditions and no current are far from ideal conditions. We managed a few quick Kingfish which were fun. Joshua wanted to know everything we were doing and why. He was really into fishing. The Kings were welcome but the top of his wish list was Mahi-Mahi. With this in mind we opted for some live bait as the lack of current and calm conditions can cause these fish to be very picky, and maybe a Sailfish would show up and that would be O.K. too, but the wish was for a Mahi. We slid a Ballyhoo out with the livies and began our search. We found a faint current edge out in 350 feet, set up camp and stayed put as it was by far the best looking area of the morning. The first Mahi in the picture came into the spread and ran a live bait all around the place but wouldn’t eat it. Picky for sure. We pulled the idle Ballyhoo up into the area, got the Mahi to switch off the livie to the Ballyhoo, and Joshua hooked his first Mahi. 1st mate Chris pitched a fresh chunk of cut Bonito into the area on a spinner and the second fish in the picture ate immediately. We were lucky today, no other Mahi by anyone else in the fleet. A single chance at the pair of the targeted fish to go with the Kings in the box. A fun Ft. Lauderdale Fishing charter with Samantha and Joshua, and Mahi- Mahi off the bucket list, but now certainly on the wish list for next time.
