Monday we left Jupiter inlet to hunt some offshore sports. Headed east to the edge, we found some interesting water at the 190’ contour line. Spread went in, we’re limited, 4 rods, 2 swimmers, 2 surface darters on top behind the swimmers. Trolled at 3-3.5 kts, nada. Had a small weed line but couldn’t raise a sniff. We upped the troll to 4.2 to 4.6 trolling downwind heading North and wham, port long went off. We knew it wasn’t big because of the drag scream, ended with a medium bonito. Shook him off and it was lines back in. Wasn’t long before starboard long got smashed but missed and then port long went off and this was serious because it hit a small spinning reel with 250 yds of 30 PP and 90 yds of clear Momoi 30 Diamond clear. After turning up the drag and trying to palm the reel to apply some additional pressure that spool got so hot I couldn’t hold it for more than 10 seconds. I yelled to turn this boat and start chasing or we’re going to get spooled and lose it. After a lot of boat maneuvering and praying the line wouldn’t snap we released a conservative guess, a 60 lb sweet wahoo. After high fives and bottled water we had lines back in. We trolled for another 3hrs only because we had to be back in by 12:30. We totaled for the day with 1 bonito, 2 Wahoo, 1 sailfish that we pitched to when it came in to the spread and 1 dolphin that after we released him he chose to swim with us right off the transom of the boat for about 10 min. Overall a great day on the water. Winds SE 5-10 knts, 190 line+/-, all bites came on down sea, N heading.
Sounds like a good South Florida day but I would have had to keep that hoo. The dolphin would have made it into my cooler as well. But to each his own. Hey bro where are you at in Jupiter? Im looking for a place in Jupiter Farms this summer. Love it there!!! I grew up in the Deerfield/Pompano area but now I'm up in NC for a little while. How is the bait situation in Jupiter? I have heard it can be difficult to find compared to other areas and inlets in S. Florida. Take it easy bro.
Hey sf_surfr. The bait situation is not that good. It's very expensive, about $100. per dozen. When we were out on Monday we used all artificials. We decided before we headed out to not take any fish. Were watching the wind for Sat or Sun, if it holds as forecasted, we'll be out. This time of year wind dictates everything offshore. If we do get out, we'll post a report good or bad.
