Jacksonville report for August
AUGUST, 2010
The tarpon have finally arrived in fair numbers as the water continues to warm. They can be seen along the jetties chasing mullet, crashing pogies behind the breakers, or feeding behind shrimp boats. You have to wade through the sharks to get to the tarpon. King mackerel are also biting fairly well. We caught fourteen last week over several days’ fishing. Large pogies are the bait of choice.
If you want to pull in large, strong fish that will test your skills, hooking sharks behind shrimp boats is hard to beat. They are ranging in size from 15-125 lbs. The big spinners will fight comparably to tarpon, complete with twisting leaps and broken tackle.
Some bull reds are in the river and can be caught deep on crab, cut, or live bait. Reds are at the jetties also, and quite a few tarpon are jumped and occasionally caught while fishing for reds. The flounder are around, but not plentiful. Drum and sheepshead are still being caught by bottom fishermen.
Before my next report, I will be fishing for trout in Iceland and Atlantic salmon in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. When I return, the bull red fishing should be in full swing!
Tight lines!
