Junior Dolphin Tournament
July 3rd and 4th 2010`


20 Junior Anglers 16 years old and younger joined together to fish the 4th Annual Islamorada Fishing Clubs Junior Dolphin Tournament on the 4th of July. IFACT (Islamorada Fishing and Conservation Trust), the benefactor of the event, helped the Islamorada Fishing Club to make this years ditty bags the best ever. Each angler received a backpack full of goodies and a new fishing rod!

Esperanza, Captained by Rusty Albury would lead his anglers to victory with the combined weight of the teams three biggest fish. Anglers John Albury and James Klein of Islamorada weighed fish 8.2 and 8.0 pounds. Eric Ekbloom from Tavernier weighed in a fish at 17.6 pounds to total 33.8 pounds. Captain Rusty said “ We found a big piece of wood and a pallet floating and our fish came from them.” The team took home first place trophies sponsored by Robbies of Islamorada.

Second place would go to team Lanza. Zane Turbessi weight two fish 6.3 and 4.3 pounds. His team mate Lance Arnold said “The big one was the first fish we saw. It would get close to the boat and then take more line. We got it real close and it saw the gaff. The fish got scared and swam away again.” After a 15 minute battle the largest fish of the tournament was in the boat. Lance’s fish weighed 19.4 pounds. The team’s second place trophies were sponsored by Mercedes Benz of Cutler Bay.

Third place sponsored by ESPN Saltwater Series would go to team Robbies. Fishing with Captain Brian Cone on the Instigator. Anna Reckwert of Islamorada weighed a 9.4 pound fish, Sarah Warner from Jupiter FL, weighed a 5.9 pounder and Cooper Scully a resident of Fort Lauderdale weighed a 5.2 pound Dolphin. The teams total was 20.5 pounds.

The Islamorada Fishing Club put on a great kick off and awards ceremony for the junior anglers and their families. My favorite part is that each angler that entered this event received a trophy! Next year we are adding new awards and expanding the event to include anglers 18 years of age and younger” said tournament director Dianne Harbaugh. Next years tournament dates are July 2nd and 3rd.
