Come learn about the fascinating world of tarpon at the "Tracking tarpon with DNA" seminar presented by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI). Tarpon enthusiasts and anyone else interested in Florida's silver kings can hear about this popular game fish during this free public presentation on Thursday, Dec. 3, 7-8:30 p.m., at the FWRI headquarters, 100 8th Ave. S.E., in downtown St. Petersburg.

FWRI scientists will share their latest findings from the Tarpon Genetics Recapture Study, as well as present an overview of their research and provide information on how anglers can participate by collecting DNA samples from their catch.

Since the summer of 2005, scientists from FWRI and Mote Marine Laboratory have been using DNA "fingerprints" to track the movements and habits of tarpon in the coastal waters of Southwest Florida. The success of the research project depends on the voluntary participation of Florida anglers. FWRI scientists will provide interested anglers with DNA sampling kits to collect samples from the fish they catch.
