Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report 07/02/09

Today we had three people on a shared charter this morning. With the trolling being so good the past few days we went straight to that. As soon as we got baits in the water we got bites. The kingfish and bonito were everywhere and they were snapping. We were having fun with this when we got an unexpected surprise. The long planer got bit and the fish was pulling off some line, but we thought it was another big bonito. When the planer got to the rod tip we started bringing in the leader. When the fish got close to the boat we were surprised to see it was a wahoo. We gaffed the fish and got it in the boat to see it was a big wahoo. We kept trolling and caught some more kingfish and bonito and a barracuda before heading back to the dock. When we got in, after taking pictures, we hung the wahoo on the scale. It weighed 40 pounds. Need less to say, We had three very happy customers that want to go again soon.

Yeah, they left a little for us and it was delicious. We appreciate whatever we can get.

Nice going, Cap Wally. Yeah, a chawdawgy is always welcome on my boat. And although it might surprise some, it has been many years since I've caught a big, Atlantic barracuda (the Pacific ones are very different and nowhere near as good a fighter) and I miss them. Very under-rated gamefish, as far as I'm concerned. Heck, anything that can bite a sailfish in half just has to be a handful on rod and reel!

Thanks for the report and good luck.
