    Florida reports 2-7

    By Jim Sutton

    Best bet

West winds will continue to blow throughout the weekend at 15 knots. Seas Saturday are forecast at 3 to 5 feet, subsiding some on Sunday. Offshore fishing is iffy. So freshwater might be where you want to head. The bass fishing on the St. Johns is going to get very good very soon, with fish fanning beds, especially in Lake George. You might try some speckled perch or bluegill fishing in the area creeks. But they're not concentrated anywhere right now. It's hunt and peck.

Another fishing closure for Nassau County anglers
    Posted: February 3, 2011 - 12:00am

    By Capt. Jim Johnson

Another closure is upon us. Speckled trout is closed for the month of February in Northeast Florida. It has now become "what can I keep?" when I go fishing not, "what can I catch?"

The list of what a fisherman can't keep is ever growing.

Backcountry fishing remains excellent with redfish cruising our banks, around structures and oyster bars. Live or dead shrimp anglers had exceptional luck last week.

A quarter-ounce jig rigged with your favorite plastic or shrimp is an awesome technique. Anglers floating a live shrimp will have exceptional luck with speckled trout, redfish or sheepshead.

    Fishing Report:
Fished the tidal part of the river 1/2 mile north of SR70. Worked a 1/4 oz jig with a gold Cotee Shad tail down the middle of the river. 73 degrees and sunny, beer is cold, water is warm (71 degrees). Caught 5 redfish and over 20 snook. Most were 16-20", but one hit in the mangroves and unexpectedly headed to the middle of the river and screamed 40 yards of line from my reel. After a 15 minute fight, a 32" snook was kayak-side. Perfect! It's like this everyday. Gotta quit my job. However, I do miss the Spring run of stripers at Graveling Point. Does anyone kayak there during the run? I've been in Florida for 15 years.
