Fishing Fort Lauderdale aboard Hooked Up

Here we are in Oct and just about out of hurricane season. And what a great way to start out the new month.
We had Brett, Brain, Erica, Elaine, David and David all from South Florida out for a few hours of deep sea fishing aboard the Hooked Up.
We started out trolling catching a few barracudas but the kings were just not biting today. So we switched over to do some kite fishing and ended up with a few nice dolphin fish for dinner.

Today we started out fishing with Pasha and David from Miami Florida and Pavel and Nikolia from Ukraine. We started out trolling the reef with 2 planners running about 45 feet down and 3 baits skipping across the surface.
While our surface baits were not producing any bites our planner baits were catching king fish and bonitos.
As we worked our way to the south off the coast of Holly Wood Florida we got to a ship wreck that laid in 225 feet of water. We brought in our trolling gear and sent down a live bait. Within Seconds of the live bait getting to the bottom the rod bent over and we were Hooked Up.
I can’t recall who got in the chair because I could not pronounce their names any way (LOL) but after a good 10 min fight up popped this big amber jack.
I really could not understand what they were saying but I’m sure they were quite happy with their catch.
As we pulled back to the dock we had our afternoon trip Charlie, Owen, Mike and Bob and 4 other friends of theirs that fished on the Local Knowledge there waiting to give their luck a shot at some deep sea fishing aboard the Hooked Up and the Local Knowledge and to give me a hard time but I’ll get to that later in this story.
These were some regular customers from New England in town that always fish with us whenever the New England Patriots come into town to play the Miami Dolphins.
We started out trolling catching about 8 black fin tunas a couple bonitos and I am sorry to say a dolphin fish. I must say that I went ahead with the boat and tried everything I could to try to help this dolphin get away but it just was not going to happen and the only person that felt worse than me about these Patriot fans catching a dolphin was the dolphin himself. (LOL)
After catching all these black fins we decided to try a little bottom fishing for snappers. Once again fishing was good and they ended up with a good dozen snappers to join their tunas for dinner.
Bear in mind that the whole time all they kept razing me about how their Patriots were going to beat the Dolphins.
I told them to put their money where their mouth was. (THAT’S WHERE I MADE A BIG MISTAKE.)
Not only did the Patriots beat the Dolphins but they put a good wiping on us to boot.
All I’ve got to say is we’ve never lost a party!! That’s all I got to say about that.

Today we started out fishing with Butch, Guile, Matt and Dane from parts unknown. We started out trolling the reef with 2 planner boards running about 45 feet down and 3 surface baits skipping across the surface. I’m sorry to say the reef was just not producing any fish today so we brought in the trolling gear and set out a couple little live bonitos on a ship wreck.
Once we got the live baits out if only took a few min till BAM the water exploded line started peeling off the spinner reel and we were Hooked Up.
Matt jumped in the chair and the fight was on. It was a back and forth tug a war for a good 15 min till finally Matt got his 47 inch Barracuda to the boat. WAY TO GO MATT!
That was all the fish we could catch on this wreck so we headed back toward Port Everglades. Just as we got back to our inlet we had a few min left so we thought we would try one last ditch effort on the ledge leading back onto the port. So out went another live bonito and within a few min Bam we were Hooked Up again. This time Dane jumped in the chair and the fight was on. After a few min Dane got his barracuda to the boat. I must admit it was not a real big one but the way fishing was going today we were happy to catch him.
As we pulled back to the dock our afternoon trip was waiting to give their luck a shot at some deep sea fishing. We had Boone, Haley, Pam and Ryan all from Dallas Texas.
We went right back to trolling the reef and while the reef was not on fire we did manage to keep everyone busy catching bonitos.

Today we had Scott, Mike, Kenny and John all from New Hampshire aboard.
Trolling the reef had been slow the last few days so went right to kite fishing with 4 live goggle eyes (Live Baits) suspended from the kites.
While once again fishing was not red hot we did manage to catch a few nice dolphin fish for dinner.

Today we had Craig, John, Laura and Mike all from Texas out for a few hours of deep sea fishing off the coast of Ft Lauderdale.
We started out trolling catching about a dozen small bonitos and a few nice king fish. Than we ended the trip slow trolling some live bonitos over a ledge that goes from about 16 feet down to 38 feet and today it paid off for us. We ended up catching a BIG barracuda on the ledge.

This morning we started out our day fishing with Gary, Lane, Katie, Ann and 1 year old Cache all from Utah.
We set out trolling the reef with 2 planner board running about 45 to 50 feet down and three baits skipping across the surface.
As it turned out we made the right choice we ended up catching a box full of king fish and bonitos.
As we pulled back to the dock we had our afternoon trip waiting on us to give their luck a shot at some deep sea fishing aboard the Hooked Up.
We had Brain from North Carolina, Ken from Long Island NY, Sean from Orlando Florida and Mike from Boston. Once again we went right to trolling the reef and once again the reef trolling did not let us down. This time the king fish were snapping and we managed to catch our limit of kings along with one nice dolphin fish to boot.

This morning we started out fishing with Dr Steven Mathew, George, Mike, Tom and Steve Senior from parts unknown.
We stopped at the live bait boat on our way out and picked a dozen goggle eyes (live baits) and went right out to 180 feet of water and set out both our kites with 2 live baits suspended from each one.
We had had a few king fish bites and managed to put 3 nice kings in the box but this was not the bite we were hoping for. Than all of a sudden on our left long kite bait up came this big sail fish and he was all over the bait. Within seconds the rod bent over and line was screaming off the reef. Dr Steven jumped in the chair and the fight was on.
It seemed Steven would gain 10 feet of line and the fish would take out another 20 it was back and forth for a good 20 min till at last the doctor got his fish close enough to the boat for us to get a good measurement of him to have a trophy made of Steven’s great catch.
Way to go Doc
As we pulled back to the dock we got the boat ready for our next trip for the day. We had Andrew, J.D., Ricky, Mike, Toney and Max all from Texas.
The kite fishing had paid off for so well during our morning trip that we decided to go right back to kite fishing. While the kings stopped biting in the afternoon we did manage to get the bite we were all looking for. A big sailfish popped up and Andrew wasted no time jumping in the chair.
At first this fish was dancing all over the surface but after a few min he went down and just kept digging down it was just a bear to finally get him to the boat. Way to hang in there Andrew.

Today we were looking for good eating fish so as we left the dock with Ron from Fort Lauderdale and Dan from Kentucky we decided to start out trolling on the reef looking for some king fish. After a good hour of trolling the reef with no bites we ventured off shore looking for some dolphin fish.
Once again no bites (RATS) we needed to find some good eating for these guys so the decision was made to fish the bottom. We worked our way to a ship wreck that lay in about 275 feet of water and dropped a chicken rig down (a chicken rig consists of 5 hooks in a line with a lead at the bottom). Finally fish!! The snappers were biting and we caught our limit of snappers.

There is a reason they call it fishing and not catching BUT if you have the right crew even on a slow day 9 out of 10 times if they keep trying different methods they WILL find you fish.

Today we started out fishing with Justin, Melisa and Grandma that’s right Grandma that’s the name we got all from Maryland.
Once again good eating fish was what they wanted but this time we skipped trolling the reef and went right to kite fishing with 4 live baits suspended from our 2 kites.
Once we got all the baits set out of the kite it only took a few min till we seen our first sail fish and this one was a monster. Melisa jumped in the chair and the fight was on. What a show this monster sail put on for us. He was dancing all over the surface of the waves. It turned out to be a 25 min back and forth tug a war but Melisa hung in there and at last she got this huge 88 inch sail fish to the boat. Way to go Melisa.
After catching Melisa’s sail we got the baits set right back out there and before we knew it we were Hooked Up again with another big sail fish. This time Justin jumped in the chair and the fight was on. This one took about 15 min for Justin to reel him to the side of the boat. Nice job Justin.
Ok what a great day we were having but still no good eating fish so in came the kites and down went our chicken rig. We sent our chicken rig down over a ship wreck in 275 feet of water and today we could do no wrong. The snappers were snapping.
We caught our limit of snappers in no time.
