Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report - May 2010

Fishing in Ft Lauderdale during the month of May offers and endless mixed bag of fish.

May constantly blew out of the east and is still doing so. In other words, the wind pushes the blue water edge in tight close to shore and the fish follow.

Typically by the end of May, the Sailfish bite has slowed down, with not many takers offshore. However, we are still averaging a handful of bites per week while live bait kite fishing.

The reef is lit up with King Mackerel, Bonito fish and Blackfin Tuna anywhere from 80-300 ft of blue water. These fish are eating anything that is presented correctly, aka, pink/white or blue/white seawitches. On Sunday, we caught one of the biggest Blackfin Tuna we've seen all year long.

The Mahi - Mahi are feeding right out front, no need to head miles offshore. Loads of schoolies and a few big boys in the mix, anywhere from 5-35 lb'ers. Mahi, also known as Dolphin fish, are one of the tastiest fish South Florida has to offer.

The shipwreck bite has truly been hit or miss. Bluerunners, Speedos and Bonito work best when looking for a fish on the wreck. Drop down a bloody bait head and if their hungry, they will eat and put up one hell of a fight. When hooked, these fish like to swim into and or underneath their territory and they don't give in easily.

Hammerhead Sharks, Thresher Sharks, Bull Sharks, Mako Sharks, Tiger Sharks and Sandbar Sharks are some of the biggest and baddest fish that swim through Fort Lauderdale every year and now is the time, they are in the neighborhood. In just 350 ft of water is where you can find one of these monsters if you're lucky. The Hammerhead Sharks are one of the coolest with their T shaped head.
