September 27, 2010 Fishing Report - Capt. Jeffri Durrance

Fishing a variety of lures and jigs off Point of Rocks produced Spanish mackerel to 3 pounds on Monday while on a tarpon scout trip. We did not see any tarpon but know of one that was jumped off the Siesta Key beaches. Pretty much hit and miss at this time of the year for tarpon. You can find them as the water begins to cool and they begin to head south for the wintering grounds. Don’t overlook the bait pods that the mackerel are feeding on as tarpon may just be joining in on the same feed.

Offshore saw grouper, gray and lane snapper, kingfish and amberjacks. The fish were caught on a variety of live bait including pinfish, bluerunner, Spanish sardines and cigar minnows. The action took place in 80 feet of water around wrecks and hard bottom. You can’t catch em if you don’t go!
