Captain's Weekly Fishing Report

Capt. Jim Klopfer Fishing Report for 01/09/2012

Fishing was a bit tough in the middle of the week as a severe front pushed through, but it did improve by the end of the week as the water temperatures started rising. Slack tides in the afternoon did not help matters, either. Speckled trout and ladyfish provided steady action on the flats near Midnight Pass on gold D.O.A. shad tails and live shrimp. The flats near Big Pass were productive for a variety of species.

The fish were feeding on Monday morning for John Krayesky and his son Dan from Seaside Park, N.J. The front was just arriving and it was breezy with a little rain, but the steady action compensated for that. Speckled trout to 17", loads of ladyfish, and a huge sail cat kept the guys busy. Live shrimp under a cork caught most of the fish.

Wednesday afternoon I took out David Sepesi and his 8 year old grand son Calvin. Fishing was tough, the water temperature had dropped 12 degrees in a couple of days, down to 52. The fish were lethargic, we picked up a few trout, a sheepshead, and a flounder. The fish gods threw us a bone though, and the last fish was a 29" redfish that Calvin caught on a shrimp on a bar near Vamo.

The Kent family from the Chicago area fished with me on Friday afternoon. We ended up catching a dozen trout and 18 ladyfish on D.O.A. jigs and shrimp near Midnight Pass. We would have caught more, but several times the dolphins moved in and shut down the action. Oh well, they are still fun to see.

Fishing improved on Saturday. I fished the radio Tower, Marker # 5, and Bird Key flats with Delia and Alan Moore and their 7 year old son Alan. They were visiting from Switzerland. Pompano, speckled trout, Spanish mackerel, black sea bass, and ladyfish hit live shrimp.

Capt. Rick Grassett's Fishing Report for 01/09/2012

A strong front passed through our area early last week dropping air temperatures below freezing and plummeting water temperatures by almost 10 degrees. However, after a few days of sun, water temperatures climbed back into the 60’s and action resumed. Anglers fishing with me on my Action Craft flats skiff the Snook Fin-Addict, out of CB’s Saltwater Outfitters on Siesta Key, caught and released trout, pompano, flounder, Spanish mackerel and reds on jigs and flies during the past week.

Keith McClintock and his grandson, Garrett Anderson, from IL, got out with me on Monday morning just as the front passed through. Due to a strong wind forecast, we fished Little Sarasota Bay from Point Crisp to Spanish Point. They caught and released trout to 17” and ladyfish on CAL jigs with shad tails. Longboat Key winter resident, Nick Reding, fished Sarasota Bay with me on Friday. We waded a sand bar in north Sarasota Bay and Nick caught and released 5 reds to 24” on my Flats Minnow fly. A great trip!

Tom Lamb, from Geneva, Switzerland, his daughter Diane Mulfeld, from Sarasota, and Roy Glah, from CT, fished the Middleground flat in Sarasota Bay with me on Saturday morning. They caught some quality fish-3 pompano, 2 flounder, a Spanish mackerel and several trout on CAL jigs with grubs.

Next week’s negative low tides in the morning should concentrate reds and trout in potholes of north Sarasota Bay. With Spanish mackerel still present in Sarasota Bay, it may be worth checking the coastal gulf for Spanish mackerel, fales albacore (little tunny) and tripletail when conditions are good.

Capt. Jack Ryan's Fishing Report for 01/09/2012

OK, what's going on here? First a hard cold front that caused a drop > in > the water temps and high winds that put a hurting to our fishing in the bay or the gulf. But this past week customers aboard the Sea Dog with Capt. Jack out of CB's who waited it out for warmer temperatures and less wind there were some impressive catches. This is how the weather works in here in the great state of Florida.

Jeff and son Zack Pappas from upper New York state had a great time offshore catching Gag grouper 22-28"(released) keeper Red grouper, Hogfish to 21", Porgies, and some large Key West grunts. Our target areas were off Venice in 45' of water using just frozen sardines and cut squid. We caught a lot of fish and I am sure if you and your friends booked a fishing trip as the weather is good that your catch would be great. Give us a call @ CB's. We are a fast 25' Mako and we are fish ready.

Capt. Roy String's Fishing Report for 01/09/2012

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! The fishing has been pretty good, we had a couple of days cold weather that slowed the fishing down a little bit. We are catching Speckled Trout, Ladyfish, and a few Pompano drifting the deeper grass flats from Blackburn Point to the Middle Grounds.I have been catching a few Redfish when I fish with live shrimp around the docks. We are going to have great weather this coming week so I am expecting the fishing to really pick up. I have been using mainly Cotee jigs in the colors gold or rootbeer with gold tail. I hope to see everyone on the water enjoying the beautiful weather and catching a lot of fish.

Capt. Bruce Burkhart's Fishing Report for 01/09/2012

Anglers fishing with me last week had some good days on the water. Tim,Brock, Mat and Brent Long came down from Ohio to fish Wednesday and Thursday. Because of the cold front we fished Little Sarasota Bay with Gold C.A.L. jigs and live shrimp. With the cooler water we fished the edges of the channel in the deeper water and had some good action with Trout, Ladyfish and Bluefish. On Thursday they wanted to get fish for dinner so we went up to Sarasota Bay. Fishing deeper grass flats they caught Pompano, Bluefish and Trout up to 19 inches. Friday I went back to Sarasota Bay with Jack, Dave, Natalie and Sam Behrens from Nebraska. The action was fast catching Trout, Sea bass, Ladyfish Flounder, and Pompano on Chartreuse jigs.
