CB's Outfitters Fishing Report, Sarasota, FL, 9-01-10

August 30 , 2010 Fishing Report - Capt. Jack Ryan

Offshore fishing is rewarding with catches of Hogfish, Mangrove snapper, Grouper and Spanish Mackerel. Mike Gast and friends of Sarasota enjoyed filling the ice box with some good eating fish and having lots fun doing so.... Just as our party really started to catch fish, the Giant Goliath grouper would move in and rip our snappers off our lines....We went to heavier tackle and still could not bring these giants to the surface.

The only thing you can do is go to another ledge and start over....That's what we have been doing for the last three weeks....It's been a lot of fun so come and join us aboard the Sea Dog at CB's.

August 29, 2010 Fishing Report - Capt. Jim Klopfer - Adventure Charters

We had a lot of rain early in the week, but the mornings were pleasant towards the end of the week. I took out James Dol from Ontario on Friday. Bait was thick in New Pass, I could barely get the net back into the boat. First spot was the Middlegrounds, and it was very productive. We caught speckled trout to 26", Spanish mackerel, mangrove snapper, ladyfish, blacktip and bonnethead sharks, small gag grouper, and catfish. The tide was outgoing, and fishing slowed as the tide quit around 8:30. I moved down to the Big Pass area, but found the water was much darker. Marker #3 and #5 had been productive, but all we only caught a few fish. We moved back up north and the water was noticably cleaner north of New Pass. Fishing the Middlegrounds and Stephen's Pt resulted in steady action on trout, mackerel, and ladyfish.

Last week, Bill Art from Sarasota and his family Jacob and Julie from Ohio fished with me in Sarasota Bay. We hit the grass flats early and caught trout and jack crevalle on DOA Glow shrimp under popping corks and CAL glow and silver jigs. We went to the docks in attempt to hook into some redfish but ended up catching snook and red snapper on live shrimp. We then headed up to north Sarasota Bay and finished up the trip catching trout, jack crevalle, mackerel, ladyfish and redfish on silver CAL jigs and DOA Glow shrimp. The day was steady with a lot of fish caught.

On Tuesday, Gary McGuirk and his two sons, Chris and Austin teamed up with me. The water was a murky brown from all of the rain and the wind was blowing about 15-18mph out of the southwest. With the bad weather and the fact that the boys were six and seven years in age, we decided to stay in Little Sarasota Bay. We loaded up with shrimp from CB's Saltwater Outfitters and and drifted the grass flats on the west side of the bay. The ladyfish were more than willing to steal our shrimp although, the boys did manage to catch some trout. We fished the oyster bars and caught sheephead up to about seventeen inches. Since the docks were out of the wind and easier for the boys we fished some of them. There, they enjoyed catching black drum to about twenty inches and the mangrove snapper kept them happy for the rest of the trip.
