Bonefishing on Andros Island
I just returned from another exciting bonefish trip to Andros Island in the Bahamas, and I wanted to give you a fishing report on my recent November trip to Andros Island Bonefish Club.

The group and I were amazed at the hundreds of bonefish schools we saw daily in the North Bight traveling from west to east along the 30 mile shore line. Each school had 25 - 100 plus bonefish. The North Bight is about 5 miles wide and over 30 miles in length and cuts straight through this vast and mostly uninhabited island. The Middle and South Bights are within easy striking distance and are similar. The fish were large, as far as school fish go, and ranged between 3 and 6 pounds, with an ample number of big bones in the mix in the 7 to 10 pound range.
We fished this activity day after day throughout our stay with few exceptions. The Middle Bight also fished excellently, as well as the East Coast. During most of the trip (I stayed 13 days, Jerry Wolland stayed 12 days and the others averaged 6 days) the winds were coming out of the North and NW so the Bights fishing was pretty easy. However, this wind made the West Side murky making it difficult to locate the big fish, so we did very little fishing there.
Most days were sunny with reasonable winds and on those we landed about 15 to 20, and more bonefish per boat per day. We did have 2 cloudy days at the beginning of the trip, on days 1 and 2, and one very windy day at the end of my stay on day 13. During those 3 days the catch was low with only several bones landed each day.

After a few days of catching lots of numbers of 3 - 5 pound bones, I decided to hunt big bonefish, those over 8 pounds, the rest of the trip. Although I did not get many shots at double digit fish, I did manage to land 3 eight to nine pounders and also landed a good number of 6 - 7 pounders. Most of the guys managed to land some bones in this size range also. It appears that the lack of big numbers of double digit fish on the flats may have been caused by all the traffic from the bonefish schools in the Bights and the fact that our West Side fishing was visibly restricted.

What I love about Andros is that there is a total of 500+/- square miles of flats in the 3 Bights alone. When you add the West Coast and East Coast flats, the inland bays and the archipelago of islands in the North and South, there are more than 1500 miles of flats on this uninhabited island (the only settlements are on the east coast). About half of these flats are within range of our camp on a daily basis without changing camp locations. Another unique feature are the tides. For instance when there is a "high tide" on the East Coast the tide on the West Coast is "low". Thus, the guide can fish the tide segment that is the most effective most of the day by simply relocating the boat further west by 10 to 15 minutes.
I truly love Andros, that's why I spend almost 2 months per year fishing this incredible place!
