Biscayne Bay/Flamingo Report

Summertime has come and gone faster than we would have thought but the temps are still pretty summer like! The fishing has been excellent thought as we move closer to Fall In Biscayne Bay the Bonefishing has been where it needs to be, an early start will get you plenty of shots at tailing fish! The south part of the Bay out of Homestead Bayfront Park is my home right now in Biscayne Bay. The Flats just outside the power plant have been very productive, with nice schools of double digit tailers! The Flies I like to throw at em this time of year are small tan crab patterns like bonefish toads or even merkin style patterns tied smaller are very effective, and nice to have on just incase a Permit decides to cross your path! The areas around Elliot Key and Ceasars Creek to the Totten Key are also producing as well, and there still some Tarpon around too in the early morning!

Flamingo is on fire right now with Redfishing, schools of tailers from 50 to 200 fish are not uncommon. The Bights to the east of the marina and the flats of the outside islands are where its happening! The best time to find fish tailing is a few hrs into the incoming tide. Also the channel run offs have been productive, fishing them with 1/4 ounce chartruese bucktail jigs tipped with shrimp is a sure way to get you hooked up. Snook fishing has beeen hit or miss, I have been fiding them early in the morining busting bait schools on the channel edges, also working the mangrove shorelines early in the a.m. is a good idea as well! A great fly to throw all day and that all species seem to love is the Prince of Tides. A good morining topwater fly is ofcourse my favorite the Glades gurgler! It always seems to get some love if the fish are around and thats why I tie them by the gross. A great way to get your fly arsenal up is to pick a pattern of the day and tie about 5 of that pattern, by the end of the month you'll be looking for some more fly boxes! Tarpon are out and about too, although I havent seen a big showing of baby tarpon that I like to see this time of year around the channel edges in the a.m hrs! They have been in good numbers around the areas near the Shark River. Its about time for a little bit cooler temps that Im sure will be a welcome sight to all of us who have sweat it out this summer! With fall on the Horizon the fishing will stay strong and only improve. Hope everyone is getting out and catching em up, stay safe and see you on the water............................Capt. Joe
