The three-man Miami crew of Dream Team lived up to the boat's name Sunday, winning the 2008 Yamaha/Contender Kingfish Masters Tournament with a 59.96-pounder.
''Our dreams came true,'' skipper Ivan Souto said.
nando Koike and Rommel Young caught the winning fish on their first strike about 8 a.m. Sunday. The king ate a live goggle eye on a kite in 50 feet of water off Haulover Inlet, just a short distance from tournament headquarters at Haulover Park.
''The fish just skyrocketed,'' Souto said. ``It took the bait. We cleared everything and chased the fish. It took about 20 minutes to bring the fish in the boat. Biggest king I ever caught in my life.''
Dream Team, a 27-foot Contender, was sponsored by the boatmaker where Souto and Young work. Ironically, their first prize -- a 21-foot Contender valued at $35,000 -- was built by Souto.
''That's the boat I built,'' he confirmed, adding he plans to sell it.
``I can't afford two boats.''
The Pompano Beach team aboard Native Son, owned and skippered by Art Sapp, was runner-up with a 44.11-pound king worth $7,630. Saturday's leader, Twin Vee, dropped to third with a 42.61-pound fish, good for $2,000. The Hollywood team of Outta Control II, skippered by Ralph Hawkins, finished fourth with a 41.22-pounder worth $3,700. Keri-N-On took $1,000 for fifth place with a 39.28-pound fish.
A fleet of 86 boats competed in the two-day tournament
