I've been doing something similar for several years now. I soak the wrap in 5 minute epoxy to toughen it up. Keeps it a little cleaner as the slime and blood just slides right off. It still provides a nice non-slip grip however.

This wrap works on your garden tools also. I'm doing my hoe right now. Planting tomatoes this year the endcap kept coming off, so I'm replacing it with one of these wraps.
I had to reference my own thread to remember how to do it quickly. |

If you have some thin rod finish epoxy, you can thin it a bit more with acetone and then just brush it on. Works best if you can put the item on a rod dryer, but then it is permanent...
