Thanks Sea Draggin - I did it to all of my gaffs and it works like a charm. Simple to do and great results. Thanks for the tip.

We're gonna' wrap our gaffs!

Guys,

You may want to pay attention to this article. We had an experienced gaff man on Monday and he went for a mahi the gaff went right out of his hand. Fortunately we had a second gaff on the boat within reach and we still got the fish. Believe it or not the gaff bobbed just long enough for us to circle back and retrieve it. We lost fishing time on a hot bite but it could have been a disaster if it had sank before getting it and if we didn't have another one on the boat (which more times than not we only have one). We're going to wrap our's before our next trip out the inlet and you may aviod our mistake if you take time now to wrap yours.

Thanks Sea Dragon for posting this great advise! Boo on us for not stopping and wrapping the gaffs the first time I saw the article.

I am gonna step in here and tell my way of starting and ending the wrap, Sea Draggin may have another or a better way, My way is this.
When you get ready to start take about a foot of 400 pound mono leader and double it to make a loop, Lay the loop with the tag ends the oppisite of where you are starting and wrap your hitches up say maybe 10 wraps leaving a long loose end where you started, when you get the first 10 or so wraps drop the long loose end at the start through the loop and use a pair of pliers to pull the tag end back under the wraps. Wrapp the whole way except for the last 10 wraps and lay your loop on the gaff and wrap over it, when you get to the end again drop the tag end of the wrap trough the mono loop and pull it back under the last wraps. if you are wrapping tight you will need to use some serious musle to pull it back under but it will anchor it solid for many years to come.

Sounds good to me. I had just been pulling the tag end back under about 3 wraps and putting a drop of superglue on it. But this way sounds much better.

Thanks. I used to try to get them under the last 2 or 3 wraps, but couldn't get them tight enough. I'll give this a try it sounds straight forward enough.
