Small observation...
I realize I am younger than the majority of those of you who contribute within the realm of the Big Game Forum, and by no means do I mean to throw this piece in here to win any prizes or anything like that. I have gleaned some serious knowledge off of the members of SFC and enjoy reading about their adventures.I can only hope that what I have to offer will be accepted and thus further along this monster that is SFC. So enough of the ass kissing, here we go...
Now it seems to me that the best anglers and captains in the world got to where they are by spending a lot of time on the water, fishing and observing. So its along the lines of observation that I make this post. As some of you know, I work in the offshore oil industry. I get to spend 21 glorious days straight living on the water. 12 hours a day, I sit in the control room of a 975ft drillship, which is nothing more than a big fish observation platform to me. We have all seen the competitive feeding that takes place between tuna and dolphin on the Discovery Channel, and we all know of the success that can be had fishing near a pod of dolphins. So now my observation... Yellowfin swim in the bow wave of big ships! We’ve all seen porpoise swimming in the bow wave of small boats, and seen pictures, or experienced it taking place on larger ships. So picture Flipper doing his thing, only to be kicked off the playground by Mr. and Mrs. Sushi. If you’ve seen some of the posts I’ve made on the rest of the site, you can see the size fish we land out here. But understand this, the fish that surf the bow wave are bigger than anything we see in the lights at night. These fish are HOGANS. But they aren’t there to play. 100,000 tons plowing through the water at 4 knots makes some vibrations, and casts a rather large shadow. Said shadow and vibration inspires the flyers to get out of the way. Once the go airborne, the tuna build speed, catch air, and crush the hell out the flyers. I KNOW YOU WANT TO SEE PICTURES, and don’t worry, I will deliver. The mood lighting was a bit off last night (overcast, no deck lights forward of the bridge) during our 25 mile trip. But I promise, in the next few days, I will get some pics, and hopefully some video of this and post it up for you. Might even try to catch one or two if I can figure out how to fight’em with an additional 4 knots of current working against me. |

assuming I understand this right and the ship's moving..
Sound to me you need a couple of things and you can make this work. First a 80 or 130 mounted in a megshift, but solid rod holder on the bow (whats the captain think of welders?). IMO The reel should be packed with braid for two reasons. Length and cutting through the water better giving you less resistance due to the ship moving. second you would need a riged dummy flyer either homemade of tubing or like a yummy fish to dangle like a kite just above the bow wave. Fight the beyatch from the rod hold and crank his ass fast! How fast is the ship moving?

We are moving 3-5kts. I'm not gonna bother with a reel. As of now, the plan is to use 120 ft of 1000 lb Dacron in black, a yummy flyer rigged on steel with an Owner chisel tip hook. The way I figure if the Dacron can be tied it off in the right spot, I'll be able to lob it out by hand, get a bite and let the shock-load on the Dacron stun the fish. The length of the line should be short enough so that when the line pulls tight, his head will be up out of the water planning along the hull. Then its just a matter of dropping the treble gaff back and getting a clean shot.
Fishing like this is pretty much secondary to watching this all take place as far as I am concerned. |

Tell the captain if he wants to score some points with the crew he'll slow the boat down for a few minutes off the record and let you fight the fish to the side of the boat and then send a few guys down a rope ladder with gaffs. No way you are hoisting a monster up the side of a ship on some regular line. Think about some kind of heavy duty rigged bridge gaff to get dinner into the boat. Would love to see this footage. On my last cruise I spent half my time at the front of the boat looking down watching the flyers jump and to see who followed them or was waiting for them to land. Good stuff! Get to work you got some experimenting to do

Man this is going to get really good. I can't wait to see some good video of this- it could be a new fishery. You can bet that if the fish have figured this out on big ships, that they might very well do it for smaller ships too. Makes you wonder if in addition to watching the spread, that maybe we should be looking ahead as well.
